Warning - Petco Return Policy I bought two clearance outfits for my babies on Jan 31. I didn't have the babies with me because I was running errands and eating out. They didn't fit so I took them back on Feb 2 (2 days later) with the receipt. They told me that at Petco clearance items are non-returnable. WHAT?? Are you kidding? I told him I was not told that when I went to check out. The Mgr told me that they have signs in the store stating "no returns on clearance items". I asked him to show me the signs because I didn't see them. He could not show me a sign because there wasn't one. The store Mgr told me that NO store would take back an item sold on clearance. I went home and called Petsmart. Guess what....YES they will take back any clearance item! They told me you should have your receipt but in some cases they will issue a refund on a clearance item w/o a receipt. I never did like Petco and I hardly ever walk in the store because it isn't a pleasant place to be. I won't be going back there. WARNING: Know that if you buy a clearance item at Petco it is YOURS to keep and they won't take it back. There. Now I feel better. LOL |
Great info!! I dont like Petco either as they are not friendly and very snobbish, like they are doing you a favor by being open. |
Grrrr. I just got some things for Ellie there and need to return one. I'm not sure if it was a real good sale or if it was on clearance but I want my money back.:( |
Maybe YOURS will take it back. I hope so. I went online to make a complaint and the online return policy doesn't say clearance items are non-returnable. At least I didnt see that. With their attitude I'm surprised they stay in business. |
I bought some of Petco's clearance items, they didn't fit and I was able to return them. However, at PetSmart, they had a very deceiving sign saying 50% off. I took a sweater up to the register and it rang up full price. I made a comment about it and the guy said it was on only selected items. I asked how I was to know which sweaters were on sale and his reply was that I'd know when I was checking out, just like now. So I thought that was a pretty crummy way to run a sale. I left without the sweater. Darn shame too, because it was cute. I think a lot just depends on where the stores are located. Some places have good customer service, some don't. |
I bought several items on clearance at Petco a few weeks ago. None of them fit but I waited about two weeks before returning them and I had no problems at all. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. |
I'm glad to hear that not all the Petco's have this crappy return policy. I would be sure to ask at the register when you are buying clearance items, just in case. I just wanted to post a warning so you will know what happened to me. There was no reason whatsoever to refuse my return. I removed one item from the cardboard to try on and it was already detached when I got it. Everything was in perfect re-sell condition. I have also seen things at Petsmart with a sale sign that didn't ring up on sale at the register. You really have to watch them while they are ringing things up. I have also had Petsmart give me a really good deal on something that wasn't marked for like 50 cents. |
Wow I didn't know that, thankyou for the info, I have return things there even with out receipt and never had a problem. I think if they don't have a sig post it they should give you your money back, at least this time:mad: |
I haven't tried to return anything to Petco but have petsmart and love their return policy. we bought a bunch of stuff with our first puppy that we never used or he didn't like, I found out in his puppy class that they will take any return, no questions asked, even if its open. so the treats and food I bought, which was open and partly used, they took back for full store credit. WHen I did this I got back almost 70 worth of store credit. |
I bought some Christmas clearance at PetCo the other day. I don't have my baby yet, but I figure if anything doesn't fit come next Christmas I'll just take it in. I do find however, that around my way PetSmart is much cleaner and friendlier than PetCo. But I had the same problem at PetSmart with the clearance sweaters, and walked out without as well. |
I just returned something at Petco that I bought last month and I didn't have the receipt but the manager looked up the receipt by my pals card and returned it (she printed out a copy of the receipt and returned it for the original amount I paid). You might ask them to look it up by your pals card. I think they are hurting for business and trying to pull scams. I took my Standard Poodle to get groomed 2 weeks ago and they told me I had to get the Works in addition to the grooming (which is an additional $19). The groomer told me that now that's a package and I have to get both the grooming $59.00 and the works $19.00. I tried to call Petco corporate but they said I had to talk to the manager so when I went back I talked to the store manager who called his manager and he said you don't have to get both of them (which I thought you didn't). He then said "but didn't you get an estimate paper when you dropped her off?" I said "yes, but the groomer told me I didn't have any other option". Well when I finally went to pick up Cassie the other lady in grooming told me that the managers are making them say that to customers to increase their sales. I said I could see doing this to a new customer but not to one that knows better and has been going there for years. Needless to say I will not be going back there for grooming....I say it's a scam and it's not right!! |
Were they christmas items? When I went to Petco in the middle of January I bought christmas clearance and was told as I was checking out that there were no returns on the christmas items. |
Be careful with the pet store floors. I'm reading about the petstores and thought I'd let you know what happened at my Petsmart. I took my dad's new puppy (6 wk lab) in with me to pick out some toys and treats and he picked up a virus from the floor. I didn't realize I shouldn't have taken him in until he was completely vaccinated. He's fine now. I definately didn't take my new Yorkie in after that. My vet said they get alot of complaints about dogs picking up viruses from petstores. I just never thought about it. |

I always take a blanket into the store with my pups and put them in the cart on their blanket. I do not let other dogs near them. Might sound overprotective, but I had them get very sick once at a Boutique photo shoot. They had been sniffing and playing with other pups. Two of them ended up in the emergency clinic..luckily they survived, but they were terribly sick. I also avoid dog parks. I know what is in my yard. Too many people take their pups out when they are sick...just like they send their children to school sick. They tell their children to go see the nurse when they get to school. Crazy stuff. |
Most stores will not take back clearance or Final sale item's. There cheap for a reason They want to get rid of them. |
This is good to know, thanks for the heads up! We don't have a Petco here (only a Petsmart) however we were out of town on Saturday and I went into a few different Petco's just to look around and I bought something (well, several things actually LOL) and need to take one thing back that was $20 (whenever we go back) - but thankfully it was NOT a clearance item, so I BETTER be in the clear as I do have my receipt! That really is such a crock that they told you that no place excepts returns on clearance items. BULL. I have returned clearance items before at more than one store with no problems what-so-ever  I will say that I do like alot of Petco's ITEMS better (they have the better dog food brands, better shampoo's and better treats in some cases) than Petsmart does....HOWEVER, Petsmart always seems soooo much cleaner and so much neater. Every single time I go into a Petco it is FILTHY and such a MESS! Whoever is supposed to straighten up those stores never does their job it seems  Geez. By the time I am done and ready to leave my hands just feel so disgusting and filthy and dirty (thank goodness I keep Purell in my purse and in my car! :D It's better than nothing in a pinch, and it least it kills 99.9% of germs - LOL!) Oh and not to mention - when I was in one of the Petco's on Saturday I went into the bathroom to wash my hands because when I picked up a bottle of shampoo it was all nasty and left shampoo all over my hands (just another example of how the stuff in the store is always so cruddy ) and anyway, when I walked into the bathroom I almost puked. It was D-I-S-G-U-S-T-I-N-G!!! And...they didn't even have 2 separate bathrooms for men and women...and right before I walked in some guy walked out...and he left the toilet seat up - OMG!! SOOOO GROSS!!!! |
I have taken back clearance clothes to Petco before. I've never had a single problem. |
I really like the petco by my house. They are always friendly, Ive never had a problem returning something and its clean. I go there all the time |
Wow, it looks like we have the worst Petco of all here. I see that most of the others seem to take returns on clearance items. That stinks that mine doesn't. I have noticed that the people that work in our Petco aren't very friendly anymore. The people that worked there a couple of years ago went out of their way to come greet Daisy and Teddy as soon as we walked in the store and they knew them by name. The nice ones are gone now and the new ones seem rude and act like they don't care if you shop there or not. I have noticed that the store is filthy too. The doggie beds are covered in filth where they have been set or dropped on the floor. Also when clothing hits the floor it is filthy. I wish they would clean their floors. It's too bad. I don't think I will be shopping there anymore. |
Thanks for the heads-up! I drove to PetCo this evening to buy Prada some clearance outfits but they were closed. Luckily I guess. I'll definitely be taking her with me if we go. I've never been there, but I don't know if I want to if they're going to be snobs. Who could work at a pet store and not be stoked about all the cute pups all the time?! |
I just recently bought some clearance items from Petco in NYC and made sure that it could be returned since I had to try the clothes on Orion first to make sure it fits. In any case, half the clothes fit and the other half was returned. I had no problems at all returning the item. However, it did take a long time since their register is completely antiquated. They really need to update their system like what they have in Target. Also check the back of the receipt to see what their return policy is. Normally if the clearance items are indeed not returnable, usually they will stamp or write the word "final sale" on it. If you plan to go back again, I would try to return it again. If they refuse, tell them that according to the receipt you are allowed to return it...just make sure that the tags is still on the item. Good luck! |
I also don't like Petco everytime i"m there no one is around to help with any questions or to carry heavy bag of dog food. I prefer Petsmart - much friendlier and quick to help out. Apple and I love going just to hang out and read doggie books LOL (not that I don't have a life but trying to socialize her more :D) |

I shop at the Petco by me all of the time. It's the only place that I know of that carries the DVP Natural Balance. Everyone seems nice and the store is always clean. I will say that I have made some purchases off of their clearance bin in the past and they were SMOKIN deals. Mostly out of season outfits but I paid literally pennies on the dollar. Best of all one of the cashiers have a yorkie rescue that I get to chat with her about which of course makes the trip even better! Whenever I go, I put all three of mine into the shopping cart on a blanket like LadyJane does and we are the hit of the store :D I was told by my vet that you need to be careful in pet stores because they can pick up illnesses from the floors there. You should NEVER bring a puppy into a Petco, Petsmart or for that matter a dog park until they are fully vaccinated. PARVO can live for a very long time on hard surfaces and can kill a puppy. |
I made a comment about my Petco experience online and this is part of the reply I received... "...Thank you for contacting PETCO regarding your concern with our store in your area. We are sorry to hear about your recent experience and see your frustration. What is listed there is our online policy only. I do apologize if this was not clearly noted to you. However, going forward there are always NO RETURNS ON CLEARANCE items at our stores...." I mentioned to them that the policy they show online does not say you can't return clearance merchandise. I don't understand why my Petco seems to be the only one refusing to take returns on clearance merchandise. They told me they were sending me a $10 gift card for the misunderstanding, which is $2 more than my purchase was for. I also have a coupon for $5 off of a $25 purchase on Valentines Day, so I will go and make my last purchase on that day with my gift card and coupon. I have also noticed the bad smell in most of the Petco's I have been in. And also they keep the stores ungodly hot in this area. It always feels so stuffy and hot in there. It's too bad because as others have mentioned they sell some good food there. |

Edited to add (for the other posters in this thread): I am not saying that ALL Petco's all over the US are like this, LOL....but all the ones that *I* have been to are....and it's always such a let down, cause alot of their products, IMO, are better than Petsmart's. |
Good to know! I prefer PetSmart too. |
I do not like the petco up here as well, the store is just yucky feeling. |
