Flea/Tick Medication & Heartworm Medication Question Since it's the 1st of the month, Lola is due for her Frontline and her Heartguard medications. I'm just wondering a few questions about it though. Lola is only 4 lbs, but the medications are for dogs "up to 22lbs". That makes me think that Lola probably shouldn't use the whole dose. She's only 1/5 of the weight that one dose of this medication is for. I just worry about giving her too much. My question is if other people with smaller dogs, give their babies the entire dose of the medicine, or if it's okay to just give them half. When I give Lola her Frontline, it literally soaks her neck, and I just don't think that is how it is supposed to be. I know it's very strong stuff, and I worry that it might be bad to use it all. However, if I don't use it all, will it still work correctly?? Thanks so much for all your help in my questions!! This is such an amazing resource to have and I'm SO thankful to all of you guys out there to answer my questions! :aimeeyork |
i use half of the flea topical in winter. i go further down into the shoulder blades. i think applying near the neck is dangerous. |
Our vet told me to administer the entire dose of heartworm medication because the dosage isn't evenly distributed through the pill- meaning if you broke it in half, more of the medication might be in one half than the other. I don't give flea/tick medication anymore but when I did I divided the "up to 22 lbs" dose between 3 dogs. I'm not sure if you can save the leftovers though. Maybe someone else can answer that for you. |
When meds are close, like 5-10 lbs., I don't split. When they're WAY out of line, like your "up to 22 lbs." - I split in half. The vets don't want you do that. They tell you that there's no way you can be assured of the proper dose if the med isn't scored for splitting.   If they can't assure you that the med has been sufficiently mixed to allow you to split a pill, how can they assure you that the pill you have has the proper dose in it and isn't a "placebo" while another pill is double or triple dosed? I find it a good way to extend the cost of the medication. I want my dogs to be protected, but the cost of meds can be outrageous. |
Frontline can be split but if your pup gets fleas, the company isn't going to do a thing about it if you do that. Heartworm medication cannot be split. That would be very dangerous. Wit the Heartgard, the Ivermectin is injected into the chew, so it is uneven and all of it may end up in half of the chew. |

Have you thought about revolution it is for fleas, heartworm, american dog tick and ear mites and their small is 5-10 I do believe, of course if you dont use fleas meds year round, then the heartworm meds would have to be given. |
