Crate training I posted earilier today about whining at night. we went and got Harley a crate and would like to start crate training him. any suggestions on websites with how to do this? |
do you mean crate training at night? |
I guess both day and night. here is my situation. my first yorkie was so easy to train. seriously he had one accident in his xpen and he would go overnight and maybe once or twice a month for 8 hours by himself (for the most part someone is home during the day). this puppy is having accidents at night and not on the puppy pads. He is pretty good during the day, we watch for the signs and since we already have a yorkie going in and out he just goes along for the pee break. we also leave our back door open so they go in and out as needed. Harley is really a good dog, he is having a hard time at night, which is totally understandable. I think crate training him for his unattended times might be the route to go, I am unsure about what to do at night. I am reading not to leave them in the crate for long periods of time. so should I leave him in the xpen at night with the puppy pads. is it ok to use the crate at night. I want so bad to help him and I don't want to do anything that would harm his little psyche (like leaving him in there for too long at night). |
At night to sleep.... and when you are not home ?? I can't help with night because my babies sleep with me... But they both have crates for when we are gone..Depends on what you want to put in there..I got Penny a big crate...because I was working at the time and she was in there during the day...(pee pad because she was young...and not trained yet..and cold out)...I put a towel over the top...and a little on the side...her bed, pee pad, water and food bowl..is in there. Angel came to us at 6 mos...Does not use pee pads...only goes outside...so she has a bed and food and water bowls... They both love their crates...like their quiet place... |
I know I am probably in the minority but we don't let the dogs actually sleep in our beds. Samson will come in at night but that was after he was already house broken. I am sure some people will have issues with this and I understand this but really Samson has been fine with our routine at night. Harley may be different and really I am just trying to find out a way to help him adjust to our home, which is why I am posting. |

NIght time crate training can be tough but i'm so glad i stuck with it! Make sure there is only enough room for him to lay down- any extra room will give him a place to pee and then another spot to lay down. Dogs won't pee if they have to lay in it so he will cry to wake you up. We used towels and stuffed them in the back of the crate. Make sure you take him out when there is a break in his crying- he needs to cry to wake you but needs to know that crying is NOT what is going to get him out- otherwise he'll just cry all night thinking you are going to let him out. Try to have a treat with you so you can reward him when he pees/poops and then put him right back in his crate :) |

thank you so much, when did you start using the crate at night for your little one. how old is too young to start this? |

Make sure he can see you when he is in his crate- Putting him in another room a) will only make his crying worse and b) he wont be able to tell you when he has to pee which will defeat the whole purpose. Dogs are pack animals and need to sleep with their "pack". Layla's crate is on a little table near my bed- so she is able to see me- howeve,r now i'm sure i could put her on the floor and she woudlnt' care- she LOVES her crate and goes in when she is ready for bed :) but we sleep in the basement and in the winter the floor might be too cold :) |
