Yorkie Topknot! How do you get your baby to sit still for their hairdo? My furrbaby is six months old, and I have a hard time getting his topknot done. He always wants to pull away and nip and gnaw on me while I am trying to fix his hair. Does anyone have any hints or tips about how you get your baby to sit still for their hairdo? |
Does he know the command stay? Mine all know that command and know they aren't going anywhere until their hair is up. Don't let him win the battle. |
I'm working on it. He is quite the stubborn one! lol |
Joey's breeder gave me a little bone shaped pillow, and said only use it when you are grooming, not as a toy. I got him to lie with his chin on the pillow, and that how I do the topknot. I have a soft small brush that I brush his forehead with, and as soon as I do this, he lies on the pillow. He gives me all the time in the world I need for this, and holds very still. Grooming his mustache is another thing. |
I sit mine in my lap facing 'away' from me because if they are facing me they want to play:rolleyes: |

I face Lola away from me too, on my lap (like the previous post stated). She's usually pretty good, but sometimes she's not very still either. It mainly just takes practice, I think. After doing it over and over again, she'll probably get more used to it. If I were you, I would try holding a little treat in my hand (it might be hard because you would probably need 3 hands...) but maybe if you have someone that can help you the first couple times. I would just hold it, so she knows it's there, and when she's still (even for a second), give her a tiny piece. I would try just slowly giving her a piece of the treat, while she's still....when you are finished with the knot, I would give her the rest of the treat. For me, it just took a lot of practice. Like a previous post said, don't let her win. You need to let her know that you're boss, and she can't do this and get away with it. Training is definitely difficult, but it takes time and patience, and soon, hopefully, it will be no problem. (Maybe it's best to practice, while she's tired....that's probably what I would do). Good luck!! You'll get it!! Just keep at it....you're the boss! |
Seymour is a "topknot" wiggler, too..... but he is getting better!!! (he better be..... he is 4 years old!! ) We do most of our grooming on a grooming table and so he knows when he is up there, that we mean business. Sometimes it helps just to take lots of time with the brush & comb and get them relaxed before you start on the topknot. We do this when we are watching tv sometimes, too. He loves it when we just lightly skim him with a brush. It can almost put him to sleep! |
i don't think i'm of any help. Phoebe loves loves her hair up, she sits very calmly while i put it up. When i'm done she runs around wagging her whole body. its so cute! |
I beat Adie into submission. It is so much easier to do when she is cowering! (Just kidding.:p I usually put a pillow in my lap and Adie lays down on it. I will comb one side of her body then the other. After that is done I do her topknot. I place her in my lap facing me. She will rest her chin on my chest and just sit there looking at me in resignation. She wasn't always that easy to do but we learned. It just takes time. At six months I don't think we had even tackled a topknot yet! |
I put Teddi up on the counter in the bathroom and immediately she lays down and puts her head down on the counter. She knows the routine. I think it works well because she is in a place that she only goes to get groomed. |
