Breeder Questions HI! I posted this under the Breeders forum, but I think I may get some good advice here too! I'm looking to purchase my first Yorkie in April! I think I may have found someone, but I want to make sure I'm asking the right questions. Here is what I've already asked: Do you dock tails and remove dewclaws? Do your puppies come with current shots and worming? Do you have a health guarantee? If so how long? Do you ever ship your babies? Do you litter/pad train the puppies, or are they taken outside? Do you crate train your animals? Are both the mother and the father residing in your home? How old are mother and father? How many other animals do you have? Do your dogs exceed the AKC standard of 7lbs? Do your puppies come with full or limited AKC registration? Are your puppies socialized with children or other animals? Do you show your dogs? Is any deposit refundable if I am unsatisfied after viewing the puppies? At what age are you planning on sending them to their forever homes? Have your past puppies' ears stood erect and do they have rather short snouts? Could you send me some pics of Mom and Dad? How long have you been breeding? What will you be feeding them when they are ready for solid food? Does anyone have any other suggestions of things I should be asking? Are these good questions, and what should I be expecting as a good answer? I'm going to have to drive at least 6hrs each way to pick up my baby, so I want to make sure I have all of my answers before I definitely go with this breeder. I don't want to be too excited just to finally have my baby and jump the gun without all the right information. THANKS IN ADVANCE! |
Those are excellent questions....I don't see where you missed anything... Maybe someone else might... Are they sending you pics...before you drive the 6 hours?? I'd ask for pics of the parents...and of the babies.. Good luck...Can't wait to see your baby!!1 |
I recieved pics of the parents today. At least 3 pics of each... one puppy, one teen, and one now... which I thought was VERY nice! The parents are a little more on the silver side when it comes to the head and face, so I don't know how tan the babies will be since we all know how their colors can change. But the parents ears are up and they have the short Yorkie snout, which I like. She also sent me a close up of a puppy... too cute! She is giving me first pick of the boys since I have offered to drive up twice, once to choose and give a deposit and then again to pick him up for good. So in all it's going to be 24 hours of driving. She is also offering to send me weekly pics of the boys so I can get a feel for which one I like before I go meet everyone and choose. And of course if I drive up at the 5-6wk mark and don't feel that any puppy is a fit for me, then I'm not required to leave the deposit, and can start searching elsewhere. Like I said it's sounding like a good move, but this is a HUGE decision, and I want to do everything as perfectly as possible. |
You seem to be doing the "homework" that should be done when purchasing a new puppy. Better safe than sorry. Congratulations, hope this turns out to be "the puppy" you so much want. |
You might want to ask what exactly the health guarantee entails. Does this breeder guarantee for liver shunts, Legge Perthes, grade 3 and 4 luxating patellas, collapsing trachea. Have the parents of the puppy been cleared of these frequent health problems? |
The health guarantee is for 1 year on anything that is congenital. And I have a certain time frame to have the pup checked out by my vet and make sure I am satisfied with him. She offered to print out the health guarantee for me. I'll ask for it in our next correspondence. |
Good Luck on getting your new pup. You seem to be doing lots of homework. I give you an A |
