Question for people who sew or knit... I brought Prince a (M) knit sweater from Petsmart. The small was too small, the medium is a little too big. I folded and stiched the underside of it so it wouldn't get wet when he urinated, but I don't like the way it looks. It is too bulky. How can I adjust it, without having it unravel? Thanks for your help. |
If cutting the bulk away is the only way to make the sweater fit properly, I would try this: first stitch a line across the sweater where you want the hem to be, then cut away the bulk. I would then make a small zig-zag stitch along the new hem line, to reinforce the edge. If you haven't already washed the sweater, you could try washing it in hot water and it will probably shrink. It might just fit perfect then :D |
Thank you so much for your help. I will try that. |
What JenCar said...I'd wash it in hot water and dry it in the dryer to see how much it shrinks. If it is still too big, then put it on him wrong side out (so you have access to the seams) and mark where you think the new seams should be. Then you stitch the new seam, cut off the excess, then bind the seam edges with a zig-zag stitch (machine) or with an overcast or buttonhole stitch (by hand). I would use buttonhole or doubled quilting thread if doing this by hand. |
Thank you!! |
I failed to mention...BEFORE you cut off the excess, try it on him to make sure it fits! If it is too tight, you can take our your stitches and try again. But don't cut off the excess until you know you've got it altered to the right size! |
Good idea. Thank you!! |
