Natural Born Bird KILLER I feel so guilty and traumatized, I guess I am just Shocked? A couple of weeks ago, I had a busy day and I had to Stop to let them go potty since it was very late in the afternoon, I stopped in an enclosed Field in the middle of our Local Shopping Mall. Suddenly Abigayle & Pom Pom took off after a Flock of Shore Birds (5 or 6) before I could Stop Abigayle she had jumped up and caught 1 in her mouth, I ran to her as fast as I could but by the time I got to her she had already Killed it! I have NEVER Trained her to go Hunting or anything so all I can blame it on is her Breeding and Natural Instincts? I did scold & reprimand her afterwards b/c at that point she was still trying to chase/kill another one. It was so fast it was literally a blink of an eye. It's hard for me to accept that my 7 lb. Yorkie that I play dress-up with is a Natural Born Bird Killer? I guess you can say that was the "Terrier" part? |
It is just their instinct. My Jewels who is extremely submissive an d doesnt have a mean bone in her body caught and killed a baby bird. |
I would have been devestated as well, crying my eyes out too. You can't change what's inbred in their makeup. It's just nature. Sorry you went threw that terrible experience. Yorkies were originally breed to kill rodent's. I have heard of some catching rabbits and doing the samething. Hope your feeling better today. It's not anyone's fault, nature is nature. Sad as it may be at times. |
Yes, I do believe you are correct. She was doing what comes naturally. Those birds move fast, and I think it was a game to her. LIke trying to catch a toy... It is fun to them . I have two cocketiels. My sone had let one out the other day and the bird took off flying all over the family room. The bird landed on the carpet, and my 10 month old Suzi was just about ready to grab her! Mouth opened and everything! My sone grabbed the bird just in time ! I have had these birds for several years. Don't feel too badly about what happened , they are just doing what all dogs would have done if given the chance. :aimeeyork |

from a kiddie yorkie book i have recieved as a christmas present the first christmas i got mickey, i remember it says yorkies hunt mice and other rodants so i think its in their instinct to hunt and try to kill little things |
Mine killed a baby bird that was trying to learn to fly, it had fallen out of the nest. She is very much the hunter. This is natural for them. She will run across the yard and chase a small flock of birds to see them fly. We have a scrub that the birds nest in a night, she will go around it to try to make them fly. I just don't want her to chase a squirrel and catch it, but she would if she could. When she sees one out the back glass door she goes crazy wanting to get to it. |
I think Yorkies would chase almost anything. My male always would chase deer into the woods. Once he went chasing after a red fox. But the worst was when he pounced on a skunk. |
My Samantha when she was younger would jump up in the air and catch sparrows. Once the timing was just right on my part and I saw it happen and yelled at her and she dropped it. The little bird was alive and did fly away. It's rather amazing that what they were bred for remains after all these generations of yorkies. I also remember one hot summer day when she sat by my fish pond waiting for a vole to pop it's head up and when it did she grabbed for it but I scolded her and it went down it's hole. She's a senior now, but she's still pretty quick.:animal-pa |
Aww, they aren't trying to be mean little monsters...what everyone else said(it's in their makeup). I imagine that was a bit unsettling to see. |
I have periodic problems with mice, so it will be interesting to see if Puddin' goes after them. My Fox Terrier kills pigeons (we have a huge back yard and many, many bird nests) and I've had to scold her for it, but she's really only doing what comes naturally for terriers. I would be devastated if she killed one of my weaver birds, tho. Terriers were selectively bred for high energy, quickness and their instinct to kill small creatures. Back in the days of the Yorkshire mines, Yorkies were actually engaged in rat killing contests and their abilities were awesome! Your Yorkie is only doing what comes naturally. |
A lot of time we forget what these little guys were bred for :animal36 They were bred to kill small animals in farms and factories that were infested with rats and mice They are cute and adorable but if you notice their play even when they are little puppies it usually involves catching and killing prey Tug of war Head shaking These are just examples of how they will dispatch small animals It is sad when they will kill an innocent animal but they are doing just what comes natural to them What you can do as an owner is get the STAY technique down pat so if they are ever in that situation you can stop them from taking off after something other than that there is nothing that can be done |

Yikes!!! Had the same experience with Rosie and a baby skunk. Still don't understand why I didn't get sprayed trying to get her away. What a stink! It happened last summer and I still think I can smell it when the weather is damp.:( |
