Does your pup like wearing clothing? My little "Chewie" isn't too thrilled with clothes at this point. She's 9 weeks old and I wanted her to get used to wearing some clothes at an early age. Every time I put them on her, she won't move and cries. She has some difficulty walking in some of the items since they are still a little big for her. Is this typical? Do they eventually enjoy having on outfits or should I just forget it? I'd like to have the option of putting clothes on her when it's cold out. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks! :animal36 |
If the items are too big for her they will turn her off. The clothes shouldn't hamper any of their movements. It's something for them to get used to. Not all pups will like the clothing thing. |
Joey was the same way, but mornings here can be very cold, and he would shake. Once I found out that fit was so important, he began liking the clothes. Find something that fits, and moves like a second skin. |
My guys refuse to put on clothes. They just stand there like statues, but when I had Penny she loved them. She would prance around the house like she was proud of herself. Do you have a girl or a boy? |
McKenzie will wear anything, but the rest of my babies are more finicky about what they will have on. Bentley will do pjs and lightweight tees, but that's about it. Tallulah won't move if I put anything on her and Emma will also do tees, and dresses but won't move if I put her in anything w/legs like pj's or joggers :) |
Mine got used to it after the initial awkwardness that lasted for all of a few hours of her first day in clothing. I had only put her in a t-shirt and she was 4.5 months old at the time and was never dressed before. That was in the summer, so I never really kept it on her. I think they look adorable in clothing, however, like my own head of hair, I like having my little hairball soak in natural sunlight and breathe the air so it grows all pretty and healthy. I've only been dressing her when it gets really cold or wet to keep her warm and as dry as possible. I even had to triple layer her clothes this past winter as it had gotten so cold and her hair's so thin. I love putting her in PJ's and Joggers and add a windbreaker or rainjacket as needed since the pj/joggers cover all 4 of her legs part way, and she is leggy so it keeps more dirt off during messy weather. :animal-pa |
I recommend starting with a sleeveless tank. Many dogs don't like items with sleeves, especially at first. And a tank makes them feel more "naked" so it's easier to get used to. Also make sure the tank fits...not too tight and not too losoe. Walmart sells XXS that may work for you and they are only $7. Also, try to make getting dressed fun for her and make a big fuss and give little treats afterward. This will make her think getting dressed and being dressed is fun and she's getting attention. Lacy has worn clothes since I got her and never had any issue with it. She just acts the same with or without clothes on usually. Rylie I've only had a year...he was almost three when I got him and he hated getting dressed or being brushed. I started him out slowly with clothes and he soon realized that getting dressed and being brushed was getting attention. He does better in sleeveless items though and isn't real crazy about having things pulled over his head. He likes the harness vests that velcro around the neck and chest the best. |
Suzi is pretty good about wearing clothes... I started out when she was very young and always tried to find propper fitting outfits. She is now 10 months old, and all of the clothes I had bought her when I first got her don't fit her anymore! I have to go do more shopping! |
Clothing is Mandatory in my House All 3 of my Yorkies Love wearing Clothes, all 3 of them have long hair and wearing Clothes keeps them cleaner for a longer amount of time between Baths. When they were Puppies I started dressing them at an early age so they would get used to it, it's just like Grooming and wearing a Topknot, you have to "Train" them to accept it. Putting Clothes on them signify's to them that we are going "Bye Bye". I dress them after I have cleaned them in the morning so it is an everyday routine, they associate it as a good thing. Besides as cold as it is outside, I would never let them go out w/o a sweater and/or jacket/coat. Abigayle & Pom Pom always wear a dress or pajama's inside b/c they tend to get cold and are always cuddled together in a blanket. Artie runs around "Au Naturale" while he's @ Home. They tend to parade and prance around when they are Dressed, especially if other People give them compliments. |
Sapphire LOVES her clothes. I didn't really have to train her to like them, either. What can I say, she's a girly girl. :p |
1 Attachment(s) Fiona has a lot of cute things, and when I put them on her, she knows she is getting ready to go somewhere!!!!! |
Finnigan has always loved clothes, when we got him it was Sept, so he was pretty much in clothes from day 1 here! Fit is very important, you don't want the clothes too loose they could injure themselves by tripping or getting a paw stuck in the sleeve or something, also nothing that could potentially get caught on a cabinet handle or a corner. |
mickey's not a big fan of wearing clothes indoors we'll bundle him up when we take him out for walks cuz its cold out, but when we come in and forget to take his clothes off, he'll bark letting us know that he want the clothes off lol some dogs love it, some don't, some will deal with it cuz its cold out |
When we first got Callie I bought her a sweater and a tank top and she never had a problem with it and now when I dress her she will putt her head through the hole and then lift on leg to put in the sleeve and then the other. She seems to know it keeps her warm and likes it. Being to big can be a problem because Callie had a sweater I put on her that was to big, the sleeves where to long so she handed her paw back to me and looked at me as to say mommy fix this its to big. |
Lola doesn't mind wearing clothes as long as they fit well. I think it helps keep her warm in this cold and snowy winter! Now if she would only keep in a top knot!!??:p |
