Long Puppy Name The Newbie Again! lol I said before in my "hello" message that I already have a name picked out for my furbaby. Here's the trouble... it's a long one. My mother said and I quote "that's a stupid name!" But I don't think so... I don't want to give it away yet, but it's three syllables. Do you think that's too long? Some people say it sounds like a show dog name, although I'm not looking to show. And there's a first and middle name. lol (The first being three syllables and the second only being one.) I would primarily call him by the first name or maybe Mr. _______ (second name.) Maybe I'm being too extravagant. But I'm naming him after something that has extra special meaning to me. I mean once I was officially going to get a puppy I had decided on this name. I even purchased his name tags already and I didn't even pick him out yet! :D So I don't think I'd ever get tired of saying the long name... because I love it! And I think it's original. It's not like "Fido" or "Max" where you could meet 10 other dogs with that same name. (Although there's nothing wrong with simple names, my last dog was Sam.) So I don't know if I'll change my mind on it, but I want some feedback. Do you think a 3 syllable name is too long? Especially one that can't be shortened? (No nickname.) Thanks!!! |
I dont think any name is Stupid. I'm sure whatever you pick out is great and if its the name that you love then keep it and be proud to call your little furbaby by it. P.S I am VERY curious to know what the name is....come on pleeeeaasseeee! :p |
i dont think three syllable is long :P my mickey's full name is mickey doe-lee kim first name, korean middle name and last name... the next puppy i'm getting i plan on naming it wolfgang amadeus mozart ___"insert real name"___ kim the reason i didnt want him name him mozart just incase i can't train the new puppy to play the piano like mozart lol i haven't really figured out his real name lol though i got a list i wanna know the name of your puppy!!!! who cares what your mom thinks! my mom thought mickey was a stupid name but she adopted the name lol |
But I'm sure you just call him "Mickey". That's the problem. There isn't really a nickname for this, and I don't know that I would even want one. But I think I'm gonna stick to my guns. Thanks for the support of my long name :) And Rachel, if you'd like to guess I'll give you a clue... I am a HUGE Disney fan. My puppy will be named after my favorite character from Disney's Adventurers Club on the recently closed Pleasure Island... If you think you've got it... send me a private message, and I'll let you in on my secret name ;) |

Oohh, I love clues! LOL. Okay I will PM you when I have a good guess! |
Nahhh, I think it's fine! We come up with all sort of long nicknames for Missy, and already she knows them all. Such as Little Missy Mouse-arooni :p I say call your puppy whatever you'd like. :) |
The problem with longer names is that it is sometimes confusing to the dog You want a name that is quick and easily separated from the other words and sounds a dog will hear A recent example  My Zach came over to me looking at me like .... Well, you called What do you want? and then I realized I was talkign to some one and had said the word "TRACK!" :animal36 |
You name you puppy whatever you want and it will be the 'right' name for you and your puppy. Don't let others sway you. That's why a lot of parents don't tell what names they've picked out for their baby until after the baby is born. Naming is a very personal discission and you're just lucky you don't have to consult with a DH or kids first. :p My Rat Terrier's name was Sadie Mae Ann Louise. She was Texan and thus must have more then the 'normal' two names. I usually just said Sadie or Sadie Mae, but lordy, when that girl heard me say the whole thing she knew the jig was up. :D Also, you will end up calling your puppy so many other nicknames, some of which may have nothing to do with his real name, and he'll learn many of them too. Boo is Mr Boo, Ba-Boo, Boo-Boo, Boo-alicious, The Boo-ster, The Boo-anitor, it goes on from there, but he's made me promise to never revile some of them. :p I had to stop calling Yogi, Boogerbutt (after a bull on the PBR) because he was actually responding to it. LOL He's still young and I don't want him to get attached to that name. :D Can't wait to see your baby and to hear the name!! |
I've also heard that a dog's name should be one or two syllables, and something he won't hear constantly. That's partly why I decided not to name my boy "March", because I figured he'd be hearing it quite a bit during, well, March. So you might want to have a nickname picked out for the pup too, in addition to the full name. |
I think that's it's really sweet that you already picked out a name. I've always done the same thing. If it's something that means a lot to you then I used the name. Don't worry about what others think. |
I think you should definitely name your fur baby what you love...even if other people think it it too long. We named our cats Solomon and Beauregard and one of our Yorkies is Huckleberry (they do have shorter nicknames, though...."Solly", "Beau" and "Huck"). If we were to ever get another, we named it Sebastian. I say go for the longer name, if it's the one that you truly like! Tammy |
Go for whatever you want! I don't think it would be too long. :) Sapphire's name is three syllables, and we don't have any nicknames for her. |
If you want to name your little puppy a long name then go for it! I have no idea what it is, and i'd love to find out! LOL . Be sure to use his name all the time so he learns quickly ! |
My test with any name is how would I feel screaming it out at the top of my lungs at the park when the little sod won't come back :D And I agree with some of the other posters that your dog may well wind up with a nick name that bears little relation to their actual name -- Dixie is currently Leelu. (don't ask me how - but she responds to it - poor little girly must have an identity crisis with all the nick names she's had) It's also amazing how dougal's ears will prick up when you say "google" - As in I'll just google that. But go with your gut - what works for you. |
THANK YOU FOR ALL THE POSITIVE REPLIES!!! I think I am going to stuck to my guns on this one... no matter how stupid anyone else thinks it is. It means something special to me. (2 gusses in PM were correct! But my clues were pretty easy if you googled ;)) |
