Is Pet Insurance worth it?? Hi everyone!! I have a 2 year old little girl, Lola. She's healthy as can be but I always worry that if something were to happen (God forbid), I would definitely want the best type of treatment for her. I was just kind of searching around the internet for quotes for Pet Insurance. To get a good plan, it's definitely not cheap. I was looking at VPI and it said, it would cost about $400/yr! I feel like that is a lot to pay when the chances are, you probably wouldn't need it. I am curious if my fellow yorkie-talkers have insurance, and if they think it is necessary. Any recommendations on the best pet insurance company's? If it were only about $10/month, that would probably be worth it..but the one I was looking at was nearly $40/month. I would do it, if it is necessary, but I'm afraid of feeling like it's just a big waste of money. Thanks so much for your advice!! :aimeeyork |
I have ASPCA pet insurance. I think I read that Pet Plan is good. |
Murphy is almost 2 years old. I recently went with Pet Plan. |
After doing the math, I decided it wasn't worth it. |
I have Embrace pet insurance now. Last year I lost my beloved little yorkie Teddy. He was only 6. I spent $16000 trying to save him. The last two weeks he was in a specialty hospital and just to be in intensive care was $800 a day, not counting anything else like meds or lab work. My neighbor spent $18000 on her dog when he had cancer. I don't want to ever refuse to have something done for my dog because I can't afford it. I spent a lot of time in that hospital and my bill wasn't all that unusual. With emergencies, specialists, lab work, tests and medicines the bill can go through the roof. I know with my insurance you can pick different things to keep the costs down also. I hope you never need to use it. |

Also, I know that its almost like a last resort to go to the pet emergency for a lot of people because of the high costs. I don't want to be worried about that. If I think she needs medical attention, I want to be able to take her in and not worry about the fees. Thanks everyone for your great advice!! |
I switched from ASPCA to Petplan because it's a little cheaper. I believe it was $294 a year, much more manageable. $16,000 is alot of money to spend so its worthe the few bucks to play it safe. |
pet insurance Hi, I'm replying from Canada. I have Vet Insurance, about $30/mth with a #20,000 life time limit. It has been worth it . Gracie is very active and has broken the toes on one foot ,$1000 to fix and las t week during a milder spell fell through a snow bank and got stabbed in two places with twigs and a cut under her eye $150 the insurance pay out was fast and efficient, Yorkies have quite a few health problems. trachea, wobbly knees etc that all may require sugery down the line. It's worth every penny| I once had to euthanise a dog because I could't afford the two hip replacements she needed I promised myself that I would never let that happen again Pam |

I've been told by someone who knows that it is better to open a savings account and put $20.00 a month away for vet costs while the dog is healthy. Some insurances will refuse certain costs, so you're better off this way.:) |
Make sure you check deductables, what's covered, what's not covered, & payment schedule. |
pet insurance Hi again, more thoughts $20/month gives you $240per year if you dog lives fifteen years that $3600 plus interest not enough plus what happens if you need something sooner , even $30/month only gives you5400 still not enough, you'll regret not having insurance Pam |
I think it's no more/less worth it than human health insurance. We could potentially not use it for years and then boom you get hit with something, usually at the worse time possible. For me personally it is absolutely as essential as my own health insurance. I think VPI is overrated and not great. I've used many different ones and I've stuck with Pets first Healthcare for the last year or two. They are great and the prices are reasonable. I pay $60 for my two: Pet Insurance from PetFirst Healthcare |
anybody ever do banfields plan? Just wondering cause I was thinking of going that way but wanted to make sure first |
