Hyper Yorkie I bought a Yorkie for my mom so that she can have some company. The yorkie is now 15 months old (neutered at 6 mos.) and is extremely hyper all the time. He constantly wants to play and if you let him be on his own for a little bit, he will chew on sofa corners or table legs (things he knows he is not supposed to do) to get your attention. It is impossible to sit down for some tv time. He also strives to take things such as slippers or napkins, anything he can get his mouth on, so that you will chase after him, like playing tag. He enjoys this very much, exhibited by his wagging tail. He is, otherwise, very smart and learns quickly. He was potty trained within a couple of weeks and knows how to do quite a few dog tricks. However, we cannot get him to calm down. He is more than a handful and is a lot more work than my mom needs. Is this a phase and will he get over it as he gets older? Help! |
Welcome to YT! It sounds like he needs more exercise. What kind of exercise does he get, and how often? |
you've just described my pup right down to the chewing napkins and slippers! She is only 8 months old so i was thinking this is normal puppy behaviour but im starting to think its a yorkie thing. Although she does settle down for lazy tv time she likes to be cuddled |
Sounds like my Maximus. I walk Max about 2-4 miles daily. He has lots of energy. He is now 19 months and still going. If he misses his walks, he brings his toys to me while I'm trying to watch TV and wants to play fetch, tug, or chase. He doesn't chew on stuff, but is always on the go. He has calmed down some from when he was a puppy. |
He's taken out for walks twice a day. Even if he runs around the house he never seems to tire. While he likes to get pet, he rarely looks for cuddle time. He will only sleep when everybody else in the house has gone to bed. We can't get him to understand that his behavior (the chewing and grabbing stuff) is unacceptable. Do you think we need to get a trainer in here? Cesar Millan? :p Thank you for the replies! |
Try upping his exercise - in addition to his walks, why don't you add 30 minutes of fetch per day and see if he calms down? |
