Is Marking Pee More Yellow?
 

At the same time as us switching Nikko's food to a grain-free kibble, his nuts have also started dropping (he's a smidge over 5mo old now I think). He's becoming a man! (Yes btw, neutering will happen as soon as the vet gives him the green light).

He was doing great with potty training (yay for the bell!!!!), but suddenly has started making pretty small VERY yellow puddles along one edge of our living room wall. When the pee dries, it leaves yellow crusties on the carpet. We didn't notice at first, because he barely squats when he does it, and certainly doesn't lift a leg. Can he be "marking" if there is no leg lift? Does the super-yellow color itself mean marking? I can't really tell what color his pee is when he pees outside, which he does still ring the bell to do. Or is the extra yellow something I could/should just blame on the food switch? If it's the food that's causing the extra yellowness, should I be worried about that?

Whew, thanks for your help all... I just can't imagine what my life would be like if I had never discovered YT. I love this little guy so much, I swear my entire life right now consists of alternating between overwhelming love for him and overwhelming worry about him! Little buggar still hasn't had a solid poo yet, even though we're 99% sure the parasites have been gone for at least a month now. But one problem at a time I guess... so what's up with the pee?

LMAO, thanks for your experience... It gives me some hope(?) that this is marking, not regression in potty training. I look forward to other people's comments/brains/opinions as well, hopefully.

BTW, I meant "fairly small," not "cute and small" yellow puddles when I said "pretty small," if that's what you were thinking. Believe me, I do NOT consider them cute!!!! :D I don't smell them as soon as I walk into the room, but I noticed the first one when I was laying on my back on the floor... something smelled like pee!!!! I looked over, and about a foot from my face was a very stinky little spot with yellow-ish crusties chillin' on the tips of my carpet. Uggh! How gross is that?

Yeah, and about laying on the floor? You'll get used to NOT laying on the floor and ALWAYS looking at the floor when you walk. Also check around all your furniture, your trashcan if it's out in your kitchen. I don't want to be negative and pick on poor Nikko, but I would think if you found one spot on the floor, then you'll probably find a couple/few more. I hope I'm wrong though. Innocent until proven guilty, Nikko! You remember that! :D

White vinegar does a good job of not only neutralizing the odour, but keeping the dog away from that spot again. Yes, the room will smell like vinegar for a short time, but it will smell like vinegar to the dog for a lot longer than it smells like it to you!

I would check with the vet about the darker yellow urine. That can be a sign of concentrated urine (often caused by dehydration...but normal if they haven't peed in a long time, like overnight or all day while you've been at work) or even a urinary tract infection.

I was drinking coffee when I read this and spit it out all over my bar. I'm sure this isn't funny to you but think about it. All urine comes from the same bladder so it would not come in 2 different colors lol. Seriously though he could be marking or he could have a uti as the above poster said. Good luck. I would get him neutered asap if he is starting to mark or it could last a lifetime. 5 months is a bit youg to start marking but it's possible
