A few questions for the experienced... Hi all, My husband and I just got married, and moved into a really awesome pet accommodating apartment complex. Most of my neighbors have pets, and we always wanted a Yorkie-- so now we are really looking into it. I just have a few questions-- He is a grad student and has classes from 10-2:30 everyday. And I work from 2-8 PM every weekday. We both have weekends off and are very outdoorsy people. I am just wondering about the well being of the puppy for the hour that either of us aren't home. I was thinking I could take the puppy for a walk right before I leave for work, fill the dishes with plenty of water and food until my husband gets home and plays with him. Is that a good idea? How long is long enough to keep a puppy home alone? Also, I have pretty valuable antique rugs in my home and I am afraid of the puppy going peepee or making them dirty? Am I over reacting? Is this something that I can train the puppy not to do overtime and not worry about accidents? I do appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks a bunch. :) |
Hi there, Congrats on finally being ready to get a dog! I don't think it's a problem to leave a dog for an hour. Just make sure that s/he is in a crate so s/he can't get into trouble. Also, crate training will really help with the potty training. As for the antique rugs, of course the goal is to have your dog housetrained and not pee on any rugs. But that takes time. I've had my dog for almost three weeks and she's doing well with training, but I think I've been lucky. Also, we've had our fair share of accidents on the carpet, and when we have company over and Meg gets excited, she still has accidents. I would either block off any rugs and keep your dog in a tiled/hardwood floor area, or see if you can move the rugs to storage for the time being. |
One hour is absolutely okay! :) While you're gone, I would either gate him off in a kitchen (tiled area, really) OR you can buy a play pen and keep him in that. This is important so that he doesn't get into trouble or hurt while you are gone, and also so that you can protect your valuable carpets. :) You can leave food/water, a bed, and a potty pad. He'll be perfectly fine. Puppies (especially Yorkies) are notoriously hard to potty train so to warn you in advance, there WILL be accidents and more than likely a lot. I would invest in a black light, some good enzyme cleaner (this part is particularly important - enzyme cleaners will destroy all detectable odors; I suggest Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution), and a steam cleaner. Lastly, just in case, I would take up your rugs if possible to prevent them being ruined until he is reliably potty trained. |
