Housebreaking Relapse????????? Hi all... My 2 Yorkies, Dixie and Daisha, were both spayed this past week and everything went fairly well. My little one, Daisha, had a harder time recovering, but she's doing much better. They were 95% housebroken before surgery and after surgery they are at about 50%. ?? Is it normal for them to "forget" to use the peepads? I have the pads in the same spots, but now its like they will just "go" wherever! I even went and bought a Bissell handheld steam cleaner to keep from dragging out my big cleaner every day. I am afraid they are going to ruin my carpet!! They aren't used to being locked up when we're home and scolding isn't helping much. I just wondered if anyone else's furbabies had seemed to relapse after surgery..... I am getting VERY VERY frustrated. They know they've done bad because they will start looking guilty (walking slowly with head & tail tucked...) and then sure enough, when I begin looking -- there's either a pee spot or a pile of poop somewhere. Granted its not very BIG, but that is beside the point. HELP!!!!!!!!!     |
I'm sorry, I don't know what to say. Both of my babies are unaltered, but I had my male pretty well housebroken until I got my female. Most of the time they go on the pee pads but there are the times, like you said, they just look guilty and you know exactly why. I DO FEEL YOUR PAIN THOUGH!! I just had to buy one of those new mini spot cleaners by Hoover. It's very good I might add, but still, it's such a pain in the butt!!! This thread is a good one. I would also like to know what to do in this situation! |
I am sorry that you are having to deal with all of this...it is a lot for one week...but I would just tell you that it is somewhat normal...but girls forgot for a couple of days until they got feeling 100% better....we just always did the same thing, telling them no and showing them where to potty and with some patience and lots of treats they went back to normal again!! Hope that helps you feel a little better.... |
Chloe and Lacey did not have a problem after spaying but lately, I'm finding little gifts in the house, I swear it's the heat here in Fl, but I can't tell which one, so I don't know who to retrain. It's frustrating, my hubby just calls out, "your babies have given you a present". I know he's annoyed but I can't punish both for one and I can't seem to catch the guilty one, they both look guilty. I'm postponing buying new carpet until this winter. |
I think they just need a little time and patience. I would use lots of praise, make a big whoopee party, and maybe treats when they go where they are supposed to and be firm with a strong "NO" if you catch them going where they are not supposed to, taking them where they are supposed to go. Also, I could be wrong, my memory is not what it used to be, but I thought someone on this forum said not to use a steam cleaner on pee places because it would "set" the pee stain into the rug. Now, mind you, I may be completely wrong. I have concrete and hard wood floors so I don't have to worry about this problem, but I thought that is what I remembered. Surely someone will confirm or dispute! |
Wow... I wish I knew about the steam cleaning thing... hmmmm, I feel another thread coming on! haha |
Maybe they just cant even make it to the puppy pad anymore for right now. I havent had a female spayed yet so I dont really have experience there yet. But I bet in a couple weeks they'll be back to normal. CHloe is 90% housebroken but she still occasionally potties on the floor which is pretty frustrating but usually its my fault becuase its been too long since I have taken her outside. |
When i got my kitty spayed she was kinda groggie for a few days and didn't feel well. She would try to use her litter box but sometimes wouldn't quite make it there or wouldn't get all the way into the box. I would wait a week and see if it improved. they just might not be as mobile right now or realize they have to go until it's too late. |
