I'm new and have a few questions about my Yorkie Russell Hi, I've had my Yorkie Russell - Oscar a day now. He is 9 weeks old today and I think he is very clever and well behaved (so far, lol). He had his first jab today and has been wormed and de-flead. I started potty training as soon as we got home with newspaper but that wasn't going very well so this afternoon i started in the garden - picking him up when it looks like he needs to go and putting him in the garden which was going fine for a few hours (A few poos and wees) but now when i put him out he just whines and claws at the backdoor. I'm not sure what to do, any advice? Am i doing the right thing? Also he keeps getting really aggresive with his bed (he digs, chews and growls) he still sleeps in it when he is tried but i don't know how to stop him. When he starts to chew the corner of the rug, slippers etc and we say no and he stops straight away but with his bed he just doesn't listen.:( One more question - I know that the most he will weigh is about 6lbs but how tall and long do yorkies roughly get? He is so small at the moment (1.35kgs, 9weeks) and i'm so worried that i'm going to stand on him? Thank you for any help you can give. I know this is a long post, thanx for reading/helping:) |
Welcome. So do you have both a Jack and a Yorkie? As for the potty training: You must stay with the pup until the business is done and then give a treat with a lot of lovies. Keep this up and with a smart Jack it wont take long at all. Good luck. (My Jack is about 8# and so scarey smart!!) |
He is a Yorkie jack russell cross, when we saw the vet he said he is basically a yorkie as he couldn't see any jack russell in him but the people we brought him from said he was a jack russell so we just saying he is a yorkie russell just incase he has got some jack in him. I have tried standing with him outside and leaving him and coming inside but he just doesn't want to do it anymore? Maybe he is just trying to show me he is boss, lol:) |
Is he going potty in the house then? I'd continue trying to get him to potty outside.... Perhaps put a harness and leash on him and walk him around. Different smells may intice him to potty. If he has his own bed and is just being a little aggressive with his own "place" then let him be. Use treats to reward him for good behavior. |
Hello and congratulations on your Yorkie Jack.. My yorkie jacks were born two and a half weeks ago, they are the cutest little dogs.. Mama is a jack rusell and daddy is a yorkie. I will try putting him on a leash and telling him potty.. :D I am keeping one of the YJ's so we will be able to share experiences soon. Again WElcome.. hugs, Carmen in nj |
mscat: Thank you, yeah he is still going inside i catch him most of the time but he doesn't know yet how to tell me he has to go(any suggestion for him?). I'm only worried about the bed because he likes sleeping in there and i don't want to have to keep buying him beds, lol.:) carmen n nj: Thats so sweet, I would of loved to have seen what oscar looked like at that age. I look forward to sharing stories with you.:) |
Thanx for the help guys. It's been a few days now and Oscar is doing 90% of his wees and poos in the garden. He doesn't let me know when he needs to go tho, I have to constantly watch him. He has also stopped attacking his bed which is good.:) He is definately a :littleang |
You could try walking him once he has all his shots. In the meantime you may want to put a harness on him, and walk him around your yard. Bring a treat, and when he goes, and he'll associate going potty outside with a pleasant reward. |
