Rawhides Ok charlie like to eat those rawhide treats--they are little sticks about 6 inches long & skinny-- Anyway he likes them, no actually he loves them. Well i give them to him about once or twice a day (one in the morning and one around supper). But sometimes my sister sneaks him some I was just wondering how many would be ok for him to eat. I don't want his nutrition to be compromised, ya know. So what do you guys think- how many is ok? ohh and another thing, are those good for cleaning his teeth or no? |
I would not recommend rawhides as they do not break down in the body and have been known to cause blockage. I do not even give them to my bigger dogs but they are not recommended for little dogs. I give mine bully sticks because they love them and they do break down and not as dangerous although I do monitor them when they are chewing them just in case. Any chew that is ingested should break down easily and I would ask about this at your store and they will point out the ones that are safest. You are a nice mommy to give two per day......mine are lucky to get a bully stick once a month but they last a while. |
Do you feel Charlie is getting overweight as a result of them? And does he still eat his dry or wet food food (his normal food)? There can be a point where as if you always give him the treats, he won't want to eat the regular food anymore... |
Rawhide is not good for little puppies or even the big ones for that matter...My vet told me not to give Gracie rawhide because she cannot digest it and it tears up her stomach...Also we had a bad experience with them she had some of those rawhide sticks and it didnt digest all the way and I ended up spending some money at the vet to get it out.... if you know what I mean :) |

Charlie is actually not even close to being overweight (he is VERY active), he still eats normal though. |
I wouldnt give rawhide to any of my dogs tooooooo dangerous :) dianne and prudence :) |
I have been giving charlie rawhides for quite a while now, I had NO idea that they were bad for him!! He hasn't had any health problems, healthy as a horse. |
I give Simon and Hallie bully sticks and flossies. But I did have a vet tell me that I need to cut down on how many I give Hallie because it could be causing her to gain weight (she was on a diet). I give them about 1 a week and they last that long but I always monitor them and pick them up when I can't be watching. |

WOW, thanks for the info. I had no idea that rawhides were harmfull. I feel so bad now, because Bia chews them up like crazy. I noticed she has been making like a hacking sound once in awhile, could something be wrong with her? She has also been gaining weight like crazy now days and I was wondering why. Now I'm sure thats why. She likes to chew stuff like paper and boxes, and clothes, and everything else she can get her lil mouth on, so thats why I would give her the rawhides so much, but now I'm not going to, so what else is out there thats like that, and that is safe for her because she needs something to chew, she loves it. Any suggestions?? |
There are Nylabones. How old is she? Is she teething? It sounds as if she is. Kim, What are those things you were talking about? |

I give my babies various different things to chew on and I do let them have rawhides as well, but what I do is get the larger ones like for a lab....This way they can chew on them forever and don't digest the rawhide. But to much rawhide can cause constipation. I can tell you that the little ones do manage to carry them around to their favorite spots, and this has worked well for me for years. Not to mention this bigger rawhide last a very very long time.... :) |
Rawhide made Thunder sick... I think... I gave Thunder some rawhide bones two nights in a row. But, last night, he threw up all night and had diarrhea. I don't know for sure if this was caused by the rawhide (he doesnt chew pieces off), but I would be careful. I was thinking all the saliva and "juices" the rawhide produced made him be sick... Poor little thing... |
