New Mommy Soon! Hi! I get my yorkie Feb. 7 - My question is he will be 6 weeks when we pick him up -- he is the biggest of the litter. At 4 weeks he weighed 1.7 lbs (Do you think that is ok). Any advise on what I should do first couple of days home, I don't want it to be stressful for him. :thumbs up :aimeeyork (Mickey) |
First of all congratulations, on your new addition, I thought that baby yorkies should stay with their mom until 12 weeks of age. I picked up my lil Prada at 10 weeks and I was told she should have stay with her mom two more weeks.. she did fine, and now she is a happy girl at 7 months. I know I am not letting my yorkie Jacks go until they are at least 10 weeks old. is a lot of good people here that know a lot more.. again congratulations.. hugs, cArmen in nj |
I got Lucy at 8 and a half weeks (which seems to be the acceptable standard in the UK, according to my vet at least). She weighed 1lb 10oz and is now around 5 and a half pounds at almost 7 months. I know that a lot of YT owners / breeders say 10 - 12 weeks is the ideal, but we had no problems. She's always been what my vet describes as "perfect", and recovered from her recent spaying so quickly it was unbelievable. |
I think 10-12 weeks is ideal and preferred. I guess 8-10 weeks is okay if the pup is sound and the owner has experience with caring for young dogs. But I definitely think 6 weeks is way too young. I know some have not had any problems getting them at like 8 weeks which is still too soon in my opinion , for a dog of the yorkie size. I would just prefer not to take the chance. Hopefully you can wait 2 to 3 more weeks. Good Luck with your new pup! :D Welcome to YT. |
Got my Maci at 7 weeks....I had to watch her very closely..she didnt eat very good and that was a major stress on me since I work and I had to come home every few hours to check on her to make sure her sugar didnt drop out. She slept a whole lot!..The only other problem was that being taken from her mom and siblings too young she never really learned not to bite too hard and was what I would call MEAN! she is 5 months old and a lot better now but we really had to work with her..Having Mac to put her in her place a few times helped also..They really need the socialization they get from their siblings...BUT we made it and I wouldnt trade her for the world! |
6 weeks is a little young for a new pup make sure he has food at all times and Double check that he has been fully weaned and is eating his puppy food He is going to miss his Mom and litter mates so he's going to cry Keep him warm and cuddled Call your Vet for his appts and ask them what they suggest for a supplement Other than that .... Enjoy!:p |
I called the breeder back after reading all the comments and she said if I was getting a tiny then it would be longer but since he is a big boy it would be ok. He is already starting to eat on his on and learning to play. As soon as I pick him up we are going straight to the vet for his first check up. I already order all of his stuff for feeding and his Neutrcal. We got his little bed, some clothes, reuseable puppy pads and a belly ban for at night. I have done so much reading. I feel safe because the lady that lives next to me has a yorkie so I have been asking her a bunch of questions. :aimeeyork -- Mickey |
