second hand stuffed animals!?! so when i went to get madison the breeder had told me she goes to thrift stores, the salvation army & flea markets to pick up stuffed toys for her yorkies then she throws them in the wash twice to clean them. i haven't done this yet and i'm still debating the idea, but i think i might try it if i can find where the thrift stores are here. its a great idea since my puppies are always looking for more toys & i don't give them any latex ones lol. do any of you do this or have thought about doing this for your puppies?! some of the toys at petstores are overpriced especially if your dog is going to tear it up and throw it around. |
I don't think I'd be comfortable doing that. I normally buy toys whenever I see reasonably priced ones and save them until their used toys need to be disposed of. |

i just stock up on new toys when they are on clearance. |
When I had a house full of fosters, I would buy really large clear plastic bags FULL (20 to 30 small stuffed toys to a bag) of stuffed toys for $2.00, at the thrift store on main street Ventura. I took off any eyes and such that could be chewed off. You should have seen the "toy" room then. It was too funny with about a hundred stuffed toys on the floor. The dogs were in doggie heaven. :D |
im not sure myself.... i always buy them when they are on sale as i dont feel comfortable as im not sure where they have been. |
I have not even thought about doing that... I only have Suzi and she likes the small stuffed animal squeaky toys . She runs around and hides them. Like Yorkiedaze mentioned, it is important to take off any eyes, and noses that can be chewed off by a puppy .:aimeeyork |
I cannot speak to the toys for Yorkies but I can share what a teacher friend of mine told me several years ago. To have enough prizes for their games at their Fall Festival, they had kids bring any stuffed toys they wanted to give away. Teachers took them home and washed them inside pillowcases. (I'm not exactly sure what the reasoning was about the pillowcases unless it was to keep them better intact.) My friend said she could not believe how well the toys washed and that the kids were thrilled with them as prizes. My guess is that if skin kids loved them, Yorkies probably would, also. |
I get them @ Thrift Stores,The Salvation Army , Goodwill and Yard Sales!! I wash them twice, take the eyes off and Baron has alot of "NEW" toys to carry around!! I've gotten him clothes and a dog bed @ a Yard Sale too!! Whatever you have to do to save $$, I'm all for it!! I can't wait for Yard Sales to start!! Come on Spring...:D |
Besides the eyes, please don't get the ones that have beads or pellets in the bottom for weight. If they are ripped open your dog could swallow them. Also be careful of small pieces that could be torn off and swallowed. Other than that I think they are a good. cheap solution, especially if you have a dog that destroys them. Just wash and disinfect before giving them. You can also open a seam and add a squeaker if you want, then sew it closed. |
I personally, would NEVER buy Gucci toys that are meant for children, nor used toys as I DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA where they have been or what pets/things have been on or around them and WE SHOULD ALL KNOW SIMPLE LAUNDRY DETERGENT DOES NOT KILL PARVO (you just never know). Anyhow, if you are going to do that Just make sure you check them out for holes or loose pieces as they are MEANT FOR CHILDREN, thus childproof but NOT DOGGIE PROOF or DOGGIE SAFE ... Also, BLEACH THEM and Dry them on HIGH even if it ruins them a bit... Better Safe than Sorry .. Hope that helps!! |
Molly is a toy fanatic  She loves the loofa babies I buy mine in bulk at LTD, There very reasonable in pricing you get 4 of them for 10.00 :) They have alot of .99 cent toys as well :) I have never thought about buying from other places then stores. |
Make sure that you take off any buttons used for eyes, and for a toy your dog will love, you can stuff it with the paper that comes in cereal boxes, or other crinkly paper. Joey just loves the noise it makes. I've done this with a few dollar store stuffed animals, that were so cute I couldn't resist. |
I'm not sure that I would give them to mine, only because I'd be afraid they might have been chew toys for another dog. If you go to the stores they have toys that are out of season pretty cheap. |
