Do you run/exercise with your yorkie?
 
I like to take Daisy on runs once in awhile, maybe like once a month. I know at 10 months old, I'm not suppose to run with her yet, says our dog trainer. But gosh, Daisy's so fast, she runs faster than my boyfriend!

Does anyone else run with their yorkies?

YOur dog trainer told you that a former ratting dog, puppy, isnt supposed to run?????:eek: WOW! Keely is 8 months old and has been jogging with me everyday since i got her!

Its the large breed dogs that have problems. Because they grow so fast and there joints need time to catch up before they can excersize too much. But even they need daily walks/joggs..


I think you SHOULD be walking/jogging her daily. If anything, you wouldbe doing her a favor.

I go walking about 2 miles a day on the weekends with my boy. He likes to go hiking to. Took him on a 6 mile hike which only took us a couple hours and he was ahead of me the whole time. They say you aren't supposed to take these little guys on very long walks because they have such fragile tendons and joints but my boy does really well. Sometimes on our long walks I will jog off and on for a few mintutes and he is ahead of me the whole way. :p Also after our walk he comes home and sleeps like a baby!! :D

I walk Daisy all the time, but we go on our extensive runs about once a month. I guess the dog trainer was referring to large dog breeds. So I guess running with her more often is ok? Oh, and as a college student, you know I'm so into fitness :wink: lol and I want my Daisy to be healthy and fit too!

i only run with milu when we are crossing the street. (either we run across together, or i pick her up when we cross streets)

why are you not supposed to run with her yet? too young? when can you run with her?

lol that's cute. well, i just heard the dog trainer saying not to run them until they are 1 year old because they are still growing, but like someone else replied, that may only apply to larger breeds?

yea, and i heard the trainer say that these little guys shouldn't be ran long distances because they are really small and have to take alot more steps than we do and this can cause harm to their tendons. So I only run my boy a few minutes then we walk. I am guessing if they are puppies they would have to take alot more steps and might have a hard time keeping up. :D

i think it should be ok, especially since you only do it once a month.
and if she is not acting funny afterwards, it should be fine.

i would like to jog with milu, i think it would be good excercise for both of us, but she is so little and it seems so strange to make her run, i feel like i should be carrying her if we go for a jog, her legs are short and tiny, and they move SUPER fast even when we are just walking. maybe running is too much for her? i don't know. :confused: i mean, wouldn't me walking around equal her running around because her legs are so much shorter? :p

I love to run with mine. They run so fast they fall over. It's a blast.

Sure, I run with my Daisy and J Gatsby too...
 
Gatsby is only 10 months old. I run with them for maybe 100 yards max., and then its all stop because Daisy is on to a scent, and has to stop and figure out what it is. They can run very fast too; for short distances, in the 10-11 mph range. Even I could not keep that up for very long, but they will do it until its all STOP, and they stop on a dime, so running with my yorkies is not really all that fun!

I have thought about training them to only walk, but I figure we both benefit from the sprinting exercise. When I run, its more like 5-6 miles in the 8-9 mph range, so no, they do not go with me on a real run, they would never make it! In fact, I'm not sure how they would do on an endurance run vs a sprint, since they never make it too far before its all stop to sniff and pee. Another issue is when my girlfriend runs for a short distance too, when Ms Daisy gets too far in front she will at times circle back to be sure the pack is together. :)

I fast walk/jog with mine...he loves it, heck when Im outa breath and done hes still want'n to go

LOL. I find it soo funny that people think that these guys running will hurt them.. They ARE working breed dogs. They still have the huge prey drive, therefore, they still hae the DRIVE. Meaning, These dogs WANT to run!


I do agiltity with my dog. She runs and jumps all the time. I skijore with keely, and the vet says she is the fittest yorkie shes ever seen. ANd stil VERY VERY healthy.

A email from my vet, After I heard that excersizing keely so much was bad.

LOL. I suggest lead training them. PM me if you would like more info on how to do so. lol Keely was like that until i lead trained her.

Well thanks for the offer. Instead, I googled "lead training" and it sounds a little too ambitious for me now, plus, training that works well in theory always fails on my guys. If Ceasar Millan (the dog "whisperer") ever came to my house, his editors would have a LOT of work on their hands to find anything to show. But that's OK, I love em anyhow!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork
