Steamcleaning carpet
 
Hello!

I am in the process of researching/purchasing a steam cleaner and I was wondering if anyone might have some recommendations.

Also, I have heard that it is not good to have pets at home when you are cleaning your carpets. Does anyone have any experience with this? I live in a 1 bedroom apartment, so I cannot put her outside, but I was thinking maybe I could just do an area at a time....or just kennel her for a day. I just don't want a sick Phoebe.

Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

There are some carpet cleaning systems that use some pretty potent stuff. Some brands have petroleum-based cleaners, and there is no way you would want a dog near this. Usually the petroleum-based cleaners are using a "dry" method of cleaning, similar to dry cleaning. The typical steam cleaner uses a cleaning system that is mainly hot steamy water pushed through the fibers and then sucked out again. The cleaning additive sounds very safe, and there are even pet formulas that don't say anything about removing pets or the product being unsafe for pets. I use the Bissell Proheat and really like it. It's extremely quite, much quieter than the vacuum and Joey doesn't mind at all when it's being used.

well if you are going to steam clean the carpet, then some systems use jsut that...steam so it shouldnt harm your pets but for convenience i would just do one room at a time and put the dog in the room that is not being cleaned...

One of the models that I am considering is a Bissell so I am glad to know you are happy with yours!

I'm certain she'll run from it (as she does with the broom and vacuum) but I was concerned about any inhalants. Good to know about the petroleum based things.

I have a carpet cleaner but I also have a Spotbot and I would be LOST without it! It is fantastic for those times when they have an accident or if they get sick on the carpet. It is quick and SUPER easy and it doesnt take up much space!:thumbup:

I have a Bissell proheat too and I kid you not, I use it daily. I have 3 kids and 2 dogs that are constantly messing up my carpets. It's convenient, inexpensive, and does the job. :thumbup:

We have a Bissell Little Green ProHeat (Vacuum Cleaners, Vacuum - Little Green(R)ProHeat) which I LOVE LOVE LOVE!! :thumbup: It is perfect for cleaning accidents right away so they don't stain excessively. We spray spots with an enzyme cleaner, let it dry and then go over it with the steam cleaner. It works perfectly for us.

We also have a larger Bissell that we use every month or so. We move out all of our furniture to use that one.

Steam cleaners are life savers.

I recently purchased Bissell's Little Green Machine Pet Pro Heat Turbo Brush carpet steam cleaner. From what I've read, it's gotten good reviews. So, when I go to try it out, which will be soon- I'll let you know. And of course the special Bissell Pet carpet pre-treatment and shampoos especially for the cleaner.
BTW, does anybody else have one of these? Does it work well? :woof:

I bought one of these about a month ago, but haven't used it yet, I wanted something for the steps, and minor accidents, but he's been such a good boy. I thought I was getting the smaller Spot Bot when I bought this, and it's a little bigger than I wanted, but it looks really powerful. It will make doing the steps much easier.

You don't even have to use the carpet cleaning solutions. You can just use Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle mixed with water. There are a bunch of "green" products on the market now too. The water and the brushes are what really work - you might have to go over it a hundred times in every different direction, but it will work. Even when they are housetrained they still puke on the carpet so I think every home with a dog needs a steam cleaner :)

Aren't the enzyme cleaners like Natures Miracle and Simple Solution designed to sit on a stain for a long period of time so the enzyme action can "eat" it up? I don't see how it would work if you sucked it up right away.

I use the Bissell carpet shampoo made for pet stains in both my Bissell Proheat and Spot Bot. I use Natures Miracle on urine stains and let it sit for about a week as directed on the bottle before I steam clean.

I have the Bissell pro-heat 2X. What I like about it is that the solution stays separate from the water. It also heats the water if it cools down. You can also turn the dial so that it uses just water, so you can rinse it when you're done.

That is the one I have! I must have found the wrong link online. It works superbly. I've found that the Woolite Oxy-Clean solution works better than the pet solutions. We just use an enzyme cleaner first to get rid of all the pet smell.
