I would also hioghly recommend the Portuguese Water Dog. It is a fun loving family... Oh why do I need to sell it all its most admirable traits have been talked about on tv. I would also suggest the Standard Poodle. A lot of people think the poodle is a foo-foo dog but it is a protective sporty dog. My mom had two when she was growing up in Maryland. She still talks about how smart and fun those two were. She could also look at the Australian Shepherd. It's not an overly large dog but does shed. The time spent with an Aussie is well worth the grooming time. Good luck to her. If she is looking for a purebred dog tell her to check into local purebred rescues. If it doesn't matter too much about what type of lineage the dog has then a shelter would suit just fine.
