Hi, I have my first Yorkie and a few questions for you all I have a new puppy of 14 weeks named Maggie. :aimeeyork She's been with me 2 weeks now and is the sweetest. I have gone from having to have my beloved Lab, Buster, of 13 1/2 years put down several months ago, to having this new little blessing...quite the difference! Does anyone have advice on teaching her not to jump up on legs, or spring up and down like a crazy nut when she wants to sit with someone in a chair? Right now with the cold weather we are wearing jeans, etc, but I don't think that once summer rolls around it will feel that great to have her scratch peoples bare legs! I've never had a "lap" dog and love it, but how DO you teach them to not jump up every waking moment?! I live where it is cold and snow right now. She is doing great on potty pad training. However, any hints from anyone on training outside potty when it is freezing outside? Should I just wait until spring to even attempt the outside potty training? Any advice would be great! |
Welcome to YT. Congratulations on your new puppy. When she jumps up on you turn your back on her. When she stops tell her she's a good girl and treat her. It may take several attemps but don't give up. Puppies are full of energy and she is still young. Training comes with maturity but it's never to early to start. Teach her to sit as well. Stand in front of her and put a treat over her nose and bring it back over her nose so she looks up and sit's. Tell her good girl and give her the treat. Yorkies are very smart and learn fast. Being persistant is key. Sometimes they have more persistant than we are:p I personally don't think it's too cold to train her outdoors. Make sure she has on a coat or sweater and take her out about 15mins after drinking water. Makes sure you have treats to treat her when she goes. After eating about 20 mins You don't have to stay out long just long enough for her to do her business. Good luck and welcome again. |

Hi! :wavey: Welcome! :welcome4: :yorkiesar |
I'm a new yorkie mom too. My 2 babies are 3 months. We've taught them commands like sit, up, lay, and stay. Well stay hasn't been completely mastered yet:) All training requires repetition and of course treats:) Make sure they are only given treats when they are training, not just because you feel like spoiling them. The sooner they understand treats and praise are only for good behavior, tricks, pottying in the right place, etc. then they will learn faster and be eager to learn:) Our babies are defenitely far from being fully potty trained, but they improve everyday day. We're doing pee pads as well as outdoor training. My babies are fine in the cold, it's more that I'm not! LOL. If they are going out there to potty make sure you use the potty word over and over so they know the command and know they arent just out there to play. It's good to always have a small treat on hand so they get excited to go potty:) Now when I take them outside and tell them to go potty the get on there mission and return ASAP to get there praise and treat. Keep us updated on your progress. Oh and CONGRATS! |
