uh oh, i think i want a girl now! i am looking into getting another yorkie... a yorkie to call my own though technically mickey was my 9th birthday present, he somehow became my parents dog. i always thought i was going to get a boy yorkie because mickey is a boy and i much love boy dogs than girl dogs (i find the girls to be very needy and snappy; westie and maltese experience). but looking at other members beautiful girl yorkies, i am torn!!!! they look absolutely adorable in little dresses! i started to also look at doggie accessories and oh man, a doggie tiara bow? and i also fell in love with a pink juicy couture dog house that i really want http://content.nordstrom.com/ImageGa...3/_5480563.jpg now im confused and don't know what to do!!!! have you ever had this kind of problem? if so which sex did you end up getting and why? p.s i thought i should also mention that i think about a new yorkie i plan on getting more than my school work... im already behind eeek! (cuz during my spare time i look up dog stuff or yorkies) oh boyyy |
I've had both male and female dogs and I like them both equally! I think you really fall in love with the dog, not the gender. I would just go and view a litter of pups, and see which one steals your heart. The bows and frills are cute, but there are cute accessories for boy dogs too. Besides, your Yorkie isn't a fashion accessory. It is a pet. What if it won't tolerate playing dressing up? You just never know! :) |
Just chose your next one for its personality, and youll find he/she fits perfectly and youll still have stuff to shop for. |

cuz i thought thats how it was supposed to be... but if i can just go there and look at the puppies and see that might be much better! plus, who says a boy can't wear pink right? |
I knew when I got my boy Jeter that I would end up getting a few more Yorkies...one is just not enough if you ask me:D I see nothing wrong with you wanting a girl but I must share my story with you about my girl...She is a tomboy:eek: She pulls her bows out of her hair within the first 5 minutes that I get them in! I have some darling clothing for her but she prefers to be :eek:NAKED:eek: The only time she likes her clothing is when its chilly out, then she keeps her cute sweaters on. She even chewed up one of her Jackets and I had to get her another one. I was just saying to my husband that our Jeter is more of a (shhhh I don't want to embarrass my boy) Princess than our little girl. You should see him prancing around in his clothing and his hair up in a bow;) Axl likes to be in his jacket or pajamas but he don't like his hair done. |
My girl Twinkle likes to be naked too!! She'll tolerate a little t-shirt and her coat when its cold out but frills and bows are a no-no:D She's a fiesty little thing and not much of a cuddler - but she's our heart and we wouldnt want her any other way:D I think the great thing about yorkies is that the bows and outfits look adorable on either girls or boys. I wish you the best of luck if you do get a new yorkie baby - don't forget to post pics!! xxx xxx |

When I went to pick out my Yorkie, I got to choose from a litter of 2 boys and 2 girls. I guess that it probably depends on the breeder and what they have available. I'm a firm believer in just following your heart, it will all work out in the end. Good luck with whatever you decide, whether it be a little boy or a girl.:) |
Shhh I won't tell if you get a boy and put him in a dress, lol. :D Lauren & Nikko |

everytime people ask me if milu is a boy or girl i always think they are kind of stupid. because she is always wearing a pink dress or a pink jacket with a pink bow in her hair, or something like that. i would answer their question ad then say "she is wearing a pink dress!" it makes me wonder why they would ask such a question!? do a lot of male dog owners dress up their dogs in a pink dress? i think that is wrong! there are super cute outfits for boys too! i don't think you should put them in a dress. i feel bad for them if they wear a dress! :p that's like if you had a son and putting a dress on him when he is a baby or a toddler. (when he is still to young to fight with you about it) |
i did research before getting milu, to figure out what if i wanted a boy or a girl. from what i read, most says that boys tend to be more affectionate. which is what i wanted. but i ended up getting a girl, because i wanted to put her in cute dresses, and because i don't like boy dog's "parts" :p plus, there were so many dogs to pick from, i think there was 6 dogs. and they were all so cute! milu is very affectionate and i love her very much!!! i think it just depends on the dog! |
I prefer to let my girl's hair and skin breathe and soak in some sunlight. When it's cold and/or wet out, I tend to dress her in gender neutral or "boy" colours. People usually assume she's a boy even when she's naked except for the blue hair tie. She's a tomboy anyway and I don't think she cares which gender others believe her to be. :p When I got her, I was actually expecting to end the day bringing a boy home... and well, I actually believed I brought home a boy... and that's another story for another day. |
3 Attachment(s) Not to sway your judgment but...(see attached) ;) I wanted a girl for a lot of the same reasons as you - dresses, bows, etc. All that being said my Rory is a tomboy! She will wear the dresses and bows, but her most favorite thing in the world is playing ball. I have pictures of her from her 1st birthday party (Alice in Wonderland theme tea party) where she is dressed as Alice complete with a giant blue headband/bow on her head and she has a tennis ball in her mouth and is surrounded by dogs 10x her size. :) The other thing is, as much as I like the dresses, I find I often buy her things that are certainly unisex if not outright meant for boys. I really like the idea of meeting all the puppies and picking based on which one you form a bond with... I, too, think people are crazy when they ask me if Rory is a boy or a girl. A few weeks ago we were at my boyfriend's (of 5 years - only relevant b/c the family has known us a long time and certainly since when we got Rory) sister's house and Rory is running around in a Juicy tiara tee (has rhinestones all over the back if you don't know the one I mean) with a matching pink bow - his stepmom then says oh that's a cute bow, but shouldn't it be blue - WHAT?!?!?!?!?! |
I think you should just tell the breeder you aren't sure which you want..that way you can look at all the puppies when I first wanted a yorkie i knew that i wanted a boy there was NO changing my mind..i even had a name picked out for him already...but once i seen all the puppies i left with a girl :) |
TresCutePiggies OMG!!!! i love how you have the juicy house!!!! i want that for my dog!!! mickey's not much of a doggie house dog he goes there to puke when he's sick so we threw it out... does your puppy like the juicy house? is it big enough for her? how big is she? p.s her alice outfit is tres adorable!!!!!! bria when i was 9, i thought i was getting a girl dog but when i got there, surprise! i got a boy dog because the girl dog got very sick the night before since i have a lot of time, ill see... i dont plan on reserving a puppy until march (because i won't have time to take care of the dog during exam period so the earliest when i can have a dog is end of april) |
I would go and look and pick a puppy on personality and looks. I wouldn't pick gender based on the reasons you want one. No offense but it is people with the intentions like yours who get dogs and then get rid of them or spoil them to the point of being snappy. Not saying you will, but like one of the PP said these are NOT fashion accessories. They are pets, animals and shouldn't be bought because they can get a cute dog house or cute clothes. It is hurtful to read this for me. I wanted a female because I grew up with female dogs and the only male dog we had was crazy and felt a female was a good match for me. Of course dressing them up and all that jazz is cute but that shouldn't be your main reason for wanting a female, these may be a toy breed but they are NOT toys:( |
I hear ya, getting a little girl to dress up is too attempting:D and the two yorkie girls I've had are both really sweet, not needy at all, one is kind of quiet and shy, the other is very outgoing, but both so sweet:aimeeyork I always want a little girl that I can dress up, and I have a skin baby boy, so perfect solution to that is getting a girlie furbaby that I can put cute dresses and bows on. but I don't put dresses on her all the time, I let her be a dog. but being a girlie girl is Dolly's attitude towards life more or less:D |

All that being said, my dogs are spoiled rotten, but they behave, so I guess not so rotten after all. Both go to doggie daycare every day while we are at work - they both LOVE it! Are they dressed up in something suitable for the weather or a bow almost every day? Absolutely. Does a dog really care if it wearing designer clothes? Of course not - that is for me, but if they don't mind it I really don't see the harm. We go for long walks to the park on the weekends and spend some time at the dog park. They both get to be dogs, if that makes any sense. Rory is clicker-trained and knows many, many commands, and she has also been on TV a few times. Lane, who we just rescued before Christmas from a puppy mill bust, obviously has much further to go in terms of commands, but we are working with her. Do I carry them around in fancy bags to the mall? Yes, I do - Rory LOVES it. She loves other dogs, children and people - and has never snapped at any of them. Of course, I have had her since she was a puppy and had the benefit of socializing her very well. Lane has always been very sweet to anyone we encounter, but due to her past in a puppy mill I'm more weary of how much she might "enjoy" being in a carrier, etc. They eat very high-end dog food and take some supplements that are mainly fruits and vegetables recommended to me. I just wanted to add that before Rory I had 135 lb bullmastiff. He was certainly my first "child." Unfortunately, almost two years after his initial cancer diagnosis and 2 6 month rounds of chemo, he passed away. They obviously don't make nearly as many clothes for GIANT breed dogs (and trust me - he NEEDED a coat - he'd shiver outside without one - moreso than my girls now, but certainly the demand isn't what it is for the toy breeds and I recognize that), so part of the appeal of a toy breed dog was that I would be able to dress them up in cute clothes, tote them around in a bag and buy them cutesy things. Another part of it was the lengthier life expectany. My bullmastiff was diagnosed at 6 years old and passed away just short of his 8th birthday. I know your post wasn't directed at me, but I just wanted to give you another point of view. Hopefully, most of the people on this forum have done their research before they get their puppy and are simply having trouble determining which sex they might enjoy the most and look to the trivial things to help them decide. Odds are they will end up loving either a male or a female the same! :aimeeyork |

He's kinda an 'it' isn't he? heehee That might be an exception to the boy in a dress rule? lol My hubby would kill me if he saw me try and put Hiro in a dress! (fixed or not) |

I know we as humans have some pretty elaborate ideas of what being male or female, but dogs are quite a bit simpler, and even moreso after being fixed. So long as the dog is happy, I think we're all happy. :-) Even if you occasionally want your little boy to wear a pink bow, or your little girl's a tomboy and prefers to be nekkid. Also, to the OP, like others have been saying, I've seen some really really cute boy dog outfits as well, including quite a few tank tops with a lot of personality. Don't worry too much about gender... I'm sure everything will fall into place when it's meant to and how it's meant to. :animal-pa:thumbup: Lauren & Nikko |
Personally for me, all of the dogs that I had had in the past as well as my parent's dogs (except for one) were male. They were all sweet loving and loveable dogs, but I was ready to find out how it would be to own a female. I know that in the feline world (my personal experiences) that males are much more loving and affectionate than females are. The females tended to be much more moody. Sooo.......when I went to the breeder's house, I was hoping for a female and that she would be a sweet, loving dog. I feel blessed as the litter was 1 week old at the time and I was the first to inquire and come to meet the breeder and see the pups. The litter was a small one: one female and one male. Anyway, I chose the female. I visited weekly and was thrilled to watch how quickly they grow and change. That in itself was a wonderful learning experience. And the breeder has children around the ages of mine. So, all of the socialization before I brought her home helped too. And, as I had already picked out her name, she knew her name when I picked her up. That was a wonderful surprise for me. I feel lucky because I have a wonderful, healthy little yorkie who definitely meets breed standards and is so sweet and loveable, along with a puppy's enthusiasm and mischievousness. I am so in love with this little dog. Also, the breeder and I have maintained a wonderful relationship as we still e-mail and telephone each other, not only about Molly but about our children also. So, I not only got a wonderful little female but a friend too. Being able to dress her up in cute dresses, bows, etc., is just an additional fun thing that is more for my benefit than for hers. Other than sweaters, the other really isn't necessary, but fun. And, had I chosen the boy, there are adorable things for boys too. Both sexes though, look adorable with a topknot. So, for me, looking for a female worked out well. And, although I guess Suzanne would be considered more of a "backyard breeder" (she's been breeding yorkies for over 15 years, does that still mean she is a backyard breeder?), everything has worked out well. Although in general, I do agree that you should go and look around and observe the pups and their mother before making a decision. You'll know, as the puppy will pick you. :woof: |

Thank you, I totally get what you are saying and I bring my yorkie with me everywhere also in a bag. I even brought her to the clinic yesterday, she's come with me while I get my nails done and so on. Yeah you can say she is spoiled also with good food, treats, toys, a nice bed, blankets and so on! But of course she rather the bed to sleep on:rolleyes: I dress mine up also but I didn't get her with the "intentions" to have her FOR dressing up and treating like " a baby ". She just ended up being MY baby and I wouldn't call her needy but she enjoys human company and is small so it is convienient for me to bring her along with me. I mainly dress her so she is warm since the weather here gets to -20. A big reason why I wanted a girl is because I know boys may mark in the house, I am in an apartment and bringing the dog out all the time is not something I could see myself doing and luckily mine was paper trained when I got her. I have nothing against bows and things in their hair, I love the look of the longer hair so putting it up is something I see a need to do. I just was a little thrown off with the original post. She wants a girl so she can dress her up and get cute things for and so on. NOTHIN wrong with it, but some people get a done for ONLY that reason and I have now seen a couple dogs up for adoption because someone bought the GIRL dog to dresss up and "play" with. The dog suffers because it isn't being treated like a dog and gets aggression and anxiety and has to be placed. One of the dogs I seen wouldnt even walk because she was so used to being carried~! I know TV and celebs make having a small dog so glamerous that others see it and think OH HOW COOL!!! Well it's not cool for me I guess. I wanted a yorkie because they don't shed, are small compact dogs and gorgeous! It has always been a dream of mine to own a yorkie but never could afford one. We travel to family members houses in the summer time and do road trips, we have a small car and of course I wanted a small dog that could come with us and if we couldn't bring the dog with us, a relative wouldn't have a problem watching a small dog for us. Your little dog is just gorgeous and I bet very smart, spoiled and not to the point of being rotten. It just gets me going a little to see someone want a specific gender just to dress up :cool::( oh and your big dog is just absolutely adorable!!!!! what a big suck, reminds me of my moms boxer hehe |
