Sophie just had two pups but one stillborn! :( Hi, I wanted to ask a question about the after pregnancy behaviors in a yorkie. Sophie just had her puppies yesterday but one died :(. She has been an excellent mommy to her only pup, but one thing that worries me is that she's often picking it up and moving it from her pet bed to the "labor pet bed" (a larger one), so I tried putting her pet bed inside the "labor" bed one and she still continued to pick it up and taking it to other places. The pup was crying the whole time she was carrying it. What should I do? At first I took it away, because I thought she was being aggressive but then I let her do whatever she wanted to do, after all nature takes over and she's the mom. I just am worried, she's still doing it. Please help!! |
So sorry to hear that you lost one. Poor Sophie :( |
I am so sorry Sophie lost a pup. If you put your thread in the Breeder's Section you will get experienced people to assist you. Good luck with the remaining puppy. |
oh I am so sorry for your loss.. I hope someone can help you with your question.. hugs, cArmen in nj |
she sounds nervous. This happens with some first-time moms. Can you contain her in a crate or an x-pen? You will probably have to help her some and "mother the mother." This can be very trying. I wish you the best. |
I would get a small to med size crate (big enough that momma has room to get up and lay down without pup getting too far away) and if its cold where you live put heating pad(the kind designed for dogs, as others for humans can get too hot) under half of the crate so half is cool and half is warm. Very lite to no bedding is needed i like to use a thin receiving blanket cut to size for my mommas this way the pup doesn't get lost in the bedding. (If momma tries to cover baby in the bedding use none at all.) Momma wants to keep baby safe from you that is why she is hiding it in different hiding places. the less you handle pup the better. hope this helps because dogs are den animals a crate/kennel works perfectly for mommas instinct to protect baby. |
My princess had two litters. First litter she only had one pup. The second litter she had 4 but we lost two of them. After birthing, i always moved her to a large crate to prevent that from happening. She did great in the crate. |
I disagree with penning her in a crate but it ma work. Is she in a quiet room away from human and animal traffic? I never had one of mine do this but I know penning any of mine of would just make them more upset. If you girl is used to being crated it may work |
