Barking and crying at night We have had Kody since the Sunday before xmas. He is a little sweetheart. I have been enjoying him so much except at night. We have crated him at night since we got him. He cries for the first 10 or 15 minutes and then goes to sleep. He wakes up about 2 and I get up and let him outside to potty. We come back in and i put him back in the crate. He will bark and cry unitl I get back up. One night he cried for an hour and I could not stand to hear him cry. I haven't gotten much sleep and it is taking a toll on me. I have become cranky (which is not like me). The last two nights I have slept on the couch with him jsut so i could get some sleep. I am a very light sleeper. My husband and i are going today to get a gate so we can put him in the kitchen at night instead of the crate. Is this a good idea or does any one have any suggestion. |
That is a good idea. Give him a blanket that has your scent on it too. this will help him feel more secure. He wants to be with you, because your him mommy. Perhaps he will feel better with more room and lots of comfort at night. Be sure to be very consistent with him otherwise he will get use to being with you all night and still cry for you . :aimeeyork |

I got my puppy on the 17th of Dec. I found if I put her crate in my bedroom with me, and just tell her shhh shhh, when she starts to cry, she stops and goes to sleep. As long as she thinks I'm in there she is fine. She gets up early in the morning sometimes too. I let her out to potty and then put her back in. She barks and cries for a min. or so and then again I tell her to hush and she goes back to sleep. Hope this is helpful. Tami <>< |
It sounds to me like your pup just wants to be near you. Where do you place the crate at night at the moment? If you dont already, would it be possible to put him in his crate next to your bed? If you place his crate right next to your side of the bed he'll more than likely calm down and go to sleep. I had this same problem with my girl when I first got her. I know just how tired and frustrated you must feel right now and this technique really worked for me. what I did when I first got Odie was put a sweatshirt that had my scent on it in his crate and put a clock that ticked it put him to sleep and we didn't have any problems with him crying over night. I also found that he was cold too so we put a heater near him so that he was warm so it was a combination of things that made our nights much easier. I hope your nights go better :) |
we got a couple of blankets with different textures and we also got a stuffed animal that was twice as big as him to snuggle with. we slept with these things the first night we got them so they had our scent and then we put them in his xpen with him at night. he loved the stuffed animal the most, he always slept with his neck over the animal. this worked out well. |
Puppy crying at night First of all, I would still crate your puppy at night! Puppies are going to get up and poop and pee. If you have a gate to keep your pup in the kitchen, then it will go everywhere!! What fun to wake up to......having to hunt and clean up under the table and chairs or maybe the china hutch !!! Get the gate so the puppy stays in one area when you are in the kitchen during the day. If you have to go else where, the puppy stays in the kitchen until you come back. That way the poo and pee is confined to a more easily cleaned area, even though it will still be a big area. But a towel, shirt, soft toy with your sent on it is a great idea. How young is your pup anyway? Mine was 4 months old when I got her, so crying was not much of a problem. Babies under 3 months however, do have a hard time being away from thier mom and litter, so they will cry more and take longer to house train. Good luck! |
I would keep doing the crate. I stopped because I'm a wimp and now I have a dog that won't crate. I had a pom before that we crated and he was so good about it after he got used to it. I really regret not crating Baxter. With the Pom we kept it right by the bed but I was much younger with more patience and I just let him cry until he got used to it. Baxter I got 18 years later when I am old and no patience! |
Thanks for all the great advice. You guys are probably right by not letting him have the run of the kitchen, but I didn't know what else to do. Kody will be 12 weeks old tomorrow. After we got him we found out the breeder let us have him to soon. He was 2 days shy of 8 weeks old when we got him. He has done real well, even potty training is going good. He will go by the door when he has to go out. We were keeping him in his crate downstairs in the kitchen so we couldn't hear him cry and bark, but it seemed to echo and i could hear it. We tried putting him in our room by the bed last night but he continues to cry and bark. I tried to sooth him but he kept on barking, i finally took him and his crate back downstairs. He finally went to sleep but like I said he was up around 2 and after going out he would not go back to sleep until I got up with him. I guess I will try to put a blanket or piece of clothing that we have worn in with him. We are going shopping tonight so maybe we will try a clock. I will let you know how it goes. |
