Why register? I was just reading everyone's beautiful registered names in another thread and began to wonder... Why do people register their pets? If you aren't breeding or showing, is there a reason? Are there any benefits to the owner, the dog or the breed? Just curious. I know I can read what AKC has to say about it all (and will) but what do you all think? |
The AKC is the only registry that does routine announced dog inspections. They also have a list of breeders who have been suspended; I believe in doing these sorts of things to help shut down puppy mills and the $20.00 registration fee helps support these efforts. It also helps keep breeders honest. For every dog you register, the breeder has to provide the appropriate paperwork, and if you don't register the dog, it similar to the breeder selling the dog "under the table." |

I didn't get mine. Got my two puppies from a family friend. She gave us a really good deal on the dogs. Both of her dogs are AKC registered and she's a great breeder. She gave us the option of having the papers, but for an extra fee since it would cost her...and of course we weren't paying much for them anyway. We're having both spayed/neutered because they're just pets too, so we decided there was no point for the papers. |

This always troubles me, there should be no extra cost for her, she registers the whole litter, for one fee, and she is suppose to always register a litter. I would guess she's having more puppies than she tells the AKC about, so that she won't be inspected. |

AKC allows the breeder to then give you the registration for the puppy that you can submit yourself. It used to be aobut $15 to send it in could be a bit more now. So where is all the big bucks. Reasons for not registering a litter if the breeder is reputable which in my opinion, the breeder is not reputable, is that the sire and dam may be AKC registered but sold under limited registration so should not have been used for breeding went behind the back of the breeder(s) they were purchased from and bred them anyway. It is also possible they may not actually be AKC registered and not telling you that. |

:thumbup: Good post, I was told once that it was hundreds of dollars to register a dog, and why bother if you aren't going to breed or show. Now I realize the dog was not eligible for registration and this is just something some breeders say to uninformed buyers. |
I found the litter application on the AKC website. The fee for registering a litter is $25 plus $2/puppy. So a litter of say 4 puppies will cost $25 + $8 total of $33. Also, litters can be registered online and in fact, the gal that used my boys although they are Canadian Dogs but had their AKC numbers and DNA numbers, she was able to register her litters online and I believe that is cheaper. The litter registration papers came to her in about a week or so. |

Registering Hi, We got our Tiki from my brother & sis-in-law. Their Yorkie was registered as well as the Dad. We got the papers, along with the geneology back about 5 or 6 generations, which was cool to read. They didn't charge us extra for the papers at all. In fact she made each new set of parents a baby book with pictures of the litter, pictures of the parents, pictures of the vet and even more pictures as the pups got a bit bigger. It was very nice. My gal friend bought Tiki's brother and they got the same thing. It is really nice for the pups because they get to play together all the time. Not this week and weekend however as her brother and his Mom & Dad are camping. We did register Tiki - because we could. She will most likely be our last pet. We never planned on having her, as we are retired and want to travel. We bought into a timeshare and she can't go so until we don't have her or they change their rules, we won't use them. She fills our lives with so much love and joy that we can't bear to be away from her. She is spayed because if we had decided to breed her, we would have ended up withmore pups cuz I wouldn't have been able to part with them. Myrna |
Interesting to read all of this info. I truely thought it was expensive for the papers. Could I try asking for them now?? I wonder... They we born on 10-14-08. I'm positive she has full breeding rights for her dogs because we have friends who got the papers for their dogs they got from her. Here's the catch which I should've mentioned earlier. The dam was actually not her's, it was one of her puppies from a previous litter who she gave to a guy friend and they bred her sire and his dam (his first liter). Unfortunately the dam's owner is a young college student and wasn't on top of anything. The sire's owner knew we were interested in yorkies so she recommended these pups. And since he was a newby, she had to interveen and play the role of the breeder. I wish I would've held out for one of her own litters, but we couldn't resist. She has only one, sometimes two litters a year and she already had people with deposits for the next litter! Bummer:( |
all 3 of mine are AKC registered because I belive in AKC and I just want to show my support. They are all spayed and i bought them just as pets but I feel great knowing where they came from example their lines and etc. |
Well, I'm confused. Ginger had papers (although she is not particularly well bred) but I didn't register her myself. So, do akc pups get registered twice? First as part of a litter registration then by the forever family? Oh, and thanks to all of you for giving answers. |
