Won't play, won't lick??? HELLO old yorkie friends! It's been a long time since I've visited here. Much has changed in our yorkie family! For one thing, a few months ago we were given a two year old male yorkie from people who just didn't want him anymore. He's adorable, but they just weren't "yorkie" people. (let's face it...we're a special breed! lol) He belonged to a teen girl who wasn't home often. I think she loved him, but noone else in the family wanted anything to do with him. When we got him, he'd been living in the garage (in the middle of the Texas summer. Grrrr.) He is a sweet and love-starved little dog, so we feel bad, but we're having a hard time "connecting" to him. First, he doesn't know how to play. Not with the other yorkies, not with toys, and not with us. We try to play with him, and he just acts slightly scared, and like he doesn't know what's going on. Sometimes when he's in just the right mood he'll instinctively ALMOST start playfully biting our hands or something, and then he stops all confused, like, "What the heck am I doing?!" lol Second...he doesn't lick. :( I know it's dumb, but this makes us so sad! Our girls our big lickers, and we are big lick appreciators. ;) It's nice to feel loved, you know?! lol He loves to cuddle, etc....but he acts like he doesn't even have the IMPULSE to lick--and he acts all affronted when we try to get him to, lol. OTHER THAN THAT, he seems like a happy little dog. I know he does love us....he DOES do the "ecstatic yorkie" routine when we've been gone and come back, lol. (Not being a licker, he shows his enthusiasm by dancing around on his hind legs, running as fast as he can from one room to the next, chasing the cat if he's handy, and sneezing his head off. ;) ) But the rest of the time, he just doesn't seem to have a lot of personality. :( We say, "Our other yorkies are furry little humans....but Jim Bob...well, Jim Bob is just a dog". You know how you can look in your yorkies eyes and see their souls?! That just isn't there with Jim Bob. Make sense?! He also does LOVE to be close to us. He's definitely a lap dog! He wants to be right by our sides at all times, and he's completely relaxed and trusting with us. He LOOOOVES to get loved on! Another plus is that in his former home, he was very (VERY!) dog-aggressive. We also have witnessed this (outside our home) a few times, but strangely, he's never had an issue with our dogs. So it feels nice that we've been able to "save" him and give him a nice loving home. Thanks for reading this loooong post, if you have! I guess my questions are: ///Does anyone else have a yorkie who won't play? Is that a normal personality trait for some, or could it be related to his environment for the first two years of his life? And if so, is it still possible that he'll come around? and ///Does anyone else have a yorkie who just does NOT lick? (and ditto all the follow up questions from above) also ///Does anyone else have a dog who SNEEZES when they're excited?! lol |
How long have you had him? It may just take some time. The little guy just isn't used to having it so good!!!! I think he is just unsure what is "right" at this time.......... eventually he will know that it is OK to lick, play, and all that normal spoiled Yorkie stuff! :D ........ Just keep building his confidence up and giving him as much attention as you can! |
Be patient & be consistant. He may not realize that you are in this for the long haul. |
Frimousse and Esmee don't lick and don't really play and I accept it like that. It doesn't mean they don't have personality , they just had different lives . |
I have an 8 month old singelton who is not a licker or kisser, or lap dog. Even though he is a singelton he did have another puppy just a couple months older than him to grow up with and they play hard together. |
Aww Poor little guy He hasn't been socialized correctly How can someone have such a cute little fun loving dog like a Yorkie and shut him up in a garage all day to fend for himself? :( Of course he never learned that humans and other dogs can be both interested and fun He will likely come around in time just keep after him Show him love and he'll get it |
Bless his little heart. Don't give up on him. He's starving to death to be loved and ACCEPTED. Thank God you got him. |
My first dog (not a yorkie) was 10 years old when i adopted her and had been abused. She never knew how to play and lick, and was frightened when i threw a ball for her. After about 8 months, she did start to run happily around the garden with me, but never really played. The saddest thing was that she never ever wagged her tail properly. Occasionally it would start to wag, but she stopped it straight away, looking fearful of what might happen...it broke my heart to think what she had been through. I eventually gained her trust enough for her to come and have lots of big hugs, and she used to nuzzle into my neck and almost purr in my ear! Its nearly 2 years since i lost her to heart disease, but theres never a day i dont think about her and am so glad that i gave her an endless supply of love in her twilight years. Im sure your little man will come round eventually, but be patient, as it might take a long time. When it happens it will light up your day. :) |
Good to see you back! |

Toby's reactions to things are not at all what we would expect from a "normal" dog. We have started working with a behaviorist, and I'm going back to the 'baby books' and starting the socialization from the 8 week stage.(My idea, not the Behaviorist) Don't give up! You didn't raise him, but I know you can work with him and bring him around. How you would feel in a country where everyone spoke a different language? Eventually he will get it, but it will take time. Good Luck! and keep us posted. |
yea he probably wasn't allowed to do all of these things, and some would say the no licking is a blessing..hehe:D. but at least he is warming up to you and over time you will see his little personality grow. My boy licks everynow and then but not much. I'm kinda glad, I don't really want to be licked to death..LOL :p and yes when my boy runs around and get's over excited he does the sneezing, perfectly normal. Good luck with your new baby! :) |

I mean, I KNOW dogs don't have the same kinds of emotions we do , but you know what I mean! He is very uneasy when you try to look him in the eyes (unlike our girls, who will exchange deep "love gazes" with us all night! :D) My mom was over last week and he kept creeping into her lap, but he just did it so apologetically, with his head hung down in dejection the whole time, like he was just waiting to get rejected. It broke my heart! So I keep having "talks" with him where I tell him that his old family loved him enough to give him a new home when they couldn't spend much time with him, and that he is going to be with us forever, blah blah. YES I KNOW he can't understand me :D....but I'm just hoping he picks up on the reassuring vibes! |
1 Attachment(s) here he is....adorable, yes?! |

Maybe with a lot of time and love being around you guys he will come around. Perhaps not a real licker , but he will come to trust his new family and surroundings. Also, he could learn from your other little female yorkies too :thumbup:My little Suzi is just like your girls, sweet and a huge licker too. ;) It is always so sad to know that A animal was treated badly by anybody. Especailly a adorable yorkie. Makes me very angry at those previous owners. People really need to think hard about ever getting a pet before bringing one home, It is hard for me to understand why anyone would just leave a dog out in the hot garage and not care. |
He is a DARLING! Honestly, I would love it if Thor were less of a licker. I know where that tongue has been! He also licks my coworkers, who have mixed reactions. |
It may take a while for him to adjust to the situation, even though it's a good one. It's like abused children. When their put in a new home it takes time to accept love. You may want to give him a little more attention then the others, until he understands he's in a good place. |
Thanks for the comments and compliments....yes, we do think he's a cute little guy! ;) Our Mazie was also given to us under similar circumstances. I'm trying to remember how long her adjustments stages lasted, b/c it does seem like Jim Bob is following a similar pattern: 1) At first they just seem overjoyed and disbelieving that they are allowed to run all over the house freely, and be a part of things, and aren't going to get penned up. 2) But after being with us for awhile, and settling in, there still seems to be a residual sadness about them. I remember with Mazie we would look at her and ask each other, "Do you REALLY think she's happy??" 3) And in Mazie's case....today, there is NO doubt that she is happy, ROFL. She is a spoiled and adored little princess and she knows it. So hopefully Jim Bob will get to that point too....although she was only nine months when we got her, and he is two years....so I guess that's why I'm a little more worried about him "learning new tricks". |
He is absolutely adorable!:aimeeyork Our Hope is not a licker - never has been and probably never will be. That is just her personality, but she is very cuddly and loving. Have a great time with him.:D |
i wonder if the puppy is having a seperation anxiety when mickey was 3 yrs ago my mom decide it to give it to my old nanny who adopted mickey's half sister who's a yr younger than him because she thought we weren't fit to ahve a dog and mickey deserved to have a friend and got to go on long walks three times a day. despite what i said mickey was given to my nanny. mickey had a really bad seperation anxiety he didnt eat or play. he moped around and waited infront of the door thinking that we were going to come get him. when we heard this we were so sad that we went th enext morning to get him. i wonder if this dog never licked... believe it or not i have met a dog that doesn't lick at all! its strange! my cousin's maltese doesn't lick at all! but i trained her to learn how to lick. though she doesn't lick all the time on demand but she licked me 4 times during the 4 months i stayed with her. give some time for the new dog to adjust and shower the dog with love! |
My guy was abused the first 8 weeks of his life until we got him. I think he is scared for life.. He does however play and give us kisses with his bad breath:D But its easy to see that Max went tru sh*t his first weeks here on planet earth. He is now almost 1 year old.. Still looking like he is being scolded or pushing when we pick him up or ask him to sit.. He does get better as the days/weeks/months passes by but Im not sure he will be healed 100% I think your guy is bit the same as Max in that way.. Just love him & show that love to him so he feels and hears it.. Eventually he will change more and more.. Just think about how lucky he is.. Now he is finally with a family that truely does appreciate him!! Nothing is more important!! |
I know there are some dogs that don't lick but have you checked the teeth? Check the gums and the space in between the jaw joints. Eventually, when she feels like she has the pecking order, she will open up for you and the family. It just takes time. She has never had to establish her place in a pack. She was the dog of a teenager who probably only half paid attention so there was no adjustment to pecking order. Its all new. New smells, new rules, new routines, new ways of doing things and fear. Its just overwhelming. Keep loving and teaching and it will be just fine. |
