Are the size charts accurate? I am wondering if you all (experienced w/ this breed) think the yorkie sizing charts are accurate. I am talking about the ones that predict how large or small your baby will be at maturity. I have a 5mos old that is at 3# and I am wondering if she will be 4# as the chart indicates, or hopefully ...just a little bigger. What is your experience??? Her parents were 3# and 5#. :aimeeyork |
I think it really depends. Sometimes it works other times it doesn't. My pup was suppose to be 4.5pounds full grown and she is 1 pound 15 ounces at almost 7 months old. So it just depends, but I used it for fun. :D |
Seymour was a little guy when we got him...... according to the "charts" he should be about 5-6 pounds. He is about 8-9 pounds. ......... He could probably lose a pound.... as he is a little chubby right now. ;) |

It really depends as it does not always work. |
Hero followed the chart, but he's about the only one who did. One, Cooper, who was so big he was WAY OFF the chart, I thought was going to weigh at least 9 pounds, ended up at just over 7 lbs. Another little girl, Lily, I thought would weigh about 5 - 5 1/2 lbs, matured at about 3 1/2 lbs. Same parents. |
I asked this question a long time ago (when I was getting my first yorkie :)), and the general consenses seemed to be to add a lb or two to the chart. However, like Majic50 I had a little girl who was a chunky little monkey :D, and she also was "off the chart" at different times. But at three years she goes between 5 - 6 lbs. If I were you, I'd take the chart in one hand, a grain of salt in the other, add a lb or two to whatever it predicts, and then realize your doggie could very well end up being smaller or larger! how's that for a helpful answer?! lol :D |
Wrigley was 1lbs 13oz when we got her at 12 weeks. By 6 1/2 months she was 3.6lbs and now at 2 1/2 yrs old she is 6lbs even. So she didn't go by the charts, I think some do and some don't! |
Size charts are an estimation. There is no way to be 100% accurate as to what their actually weight will be in the end, there are too many factors that can change their weight to be completely accurate. A small dog can be overweight or underweight just from their feeding habits and that alone will change weigh estimations. I have several dogs that are the same size but weigh very differently, some eat well and some are picky eaters. I do track weigh growth with every litter for comparison purposes. Having litters with the same parents and keeping accurate charts can help us breeders track growth better, but it still isn't 100% accurate. |
It wasnt for my 2 |
Until something more accurate comes along it's the chart or rule of thumb. |
My girls (Angle and Ceci) are both from the same litter. They are 8 months old. Ceci weighs 4 lbs and Angle weighs 7.5 Lbs. They free feed on Innova puppy. It does not seem that one eats more than the other and are about the same height. I just tell Angle she is big boned LOL Angle is in the front of photo Ceci in back. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...dAngel9-08.jpg |

Hooray, Minnie! Minnie was charting to be 4.5 pounds when I got her at 10 weeks, but now at 19 weeks and 4 pounds 15 ounces, she is off the charts! (Good job, girl!) :aimeeyork |
You have to remember that these would just be averages, when computing averages there is always a standard deviation away from the average. My guess would be the standard deviation would be about a pound, so you could say the charts are accurate, plus or minus a pound, there were still be some dogs who are outside of this realm. A rule of thumb is don't buy any really expensive clothes until after a year! :D |
