i am a bad mommy
 
i spanked charlie's butt twice today (not hard just soft spank) and yelled at him today for his accidents. I was so frustrated with everything that was why I had that reaction. Now he is sad. I am horrible. I hope he forgives me. This is having a negative impact on our relationship building progress. I need to seriously invest in puppy training courses.

everyone has bad days...ur not a bad mommy...you may get some negative replies, but please remember bad days do happen,dont beat yourself up over it!these lil guys take time,patience

the yelling and the spanking will only teach him that he needs to hide his accident next time. He doesn't get that you are yelling at him for what he did 2 min ago- to him you are yelling at him for what he is doing NOW which might just be sitting on the floor- potty training can only be done successfully through positive reinforcement.

we all reach our limit but next time try to just walk away.

I know it can be frustrating potty training, some just take longer than others....and some never get it.....If he's peeing you can get belly bands to help out so if he would pee it would be contained on his band. These are great....

I know you are not really serious about spanking ( I hope) but I just wanted to say the the pet has to be corrected while he's IN the act. If he's scolded, even if it's just 30 seconds after, the dog will not connect the scolding to the accident. They just don't have that capacity. He would have no idea why he's being punished ......I hope things get better.....

You should NEVER scold a dog for an accident. By doing that, In his mind, he is being punished for releiving himself. NOt the fact that he did it on the floor. By doing that your teaching your dog that its not okay to pee, And after a while, he will start holding his pee until he cant even make it to the door to ask to go out. . Negative reinforcment should NEVER EVER EVER be used in training. Any kind of training.

The best advice I ever received on potty training was from puppy class when Bubba was a baby. The trainer told us, "when the puppy pees or poops on the floor or rug, roll up a newspaper and hit yourself in the head while saying-watch the puppy more closely" Now when one of them has an accident I remember this and realize it's probably because I wasn't paying attention when they tried to tell me they wanted out:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Take a deep breath and count 1-10 seconds the next time you feel like spanking him again. Calm down and try to remember what makes you love your puppy.

The only positive thing that I have to say about this is...at least you realize that what you did was wrong. Go for the puppy training classes. It will make life easier on both of you.

It is easy to lose patience with little puppies, especially with potty training. I'd giving yourself A timeout by walking away and taking deep breaths. It won't help to physically spank and yell. It will make the puppy fearful or worse even run away from you.
It is just like with very young children, patience, consitency, and routine works much more effectivley.:aimeeyork

Remember those feelings you had when you named yourself 'newproudmum'! I agree completely that spanking and shouting will get you nowhere and will actually have a negative effect. Hang on in there and keep trying. Put away any expensive rugs and anything you dont want spoilt. Put down lots of wee pads...all over the floor if you have to for a bit! Let us have an update and we will all be hoping that your little baby learns quickly.

Don't take it so bad
We all have our frustrating moments
Your puppy is reacting to your frustration That's why he is running from you
He has NO idea what you're mad about
He just knows that your mad
When a dog makes a potty mistake the deed is done
Clean it as best you can and go from there

There are going to be set backs ... expect them but be diligent and keep up the training work
He'll get it sooner or later
