Whatever 1) What do you think of that word? 2) What do you think of people who use that word frequently? (I am trying to convince my sister that it's a stupid and rude word to use because it is one of her favorite words! she will not listen to me, so I thought, to be fair, I should see if others also feel the same way about that word) Thank you for helping me out! who knows, maybe I am over-reacting and most people are fine with the word and think it's a great word! Please give me your honest opinion, thanks! |
1) I think it is in most cases an antagonistic word. 2) I know some ppl that use it as to end conversations and when they are mad. I only have one friend who uses it all the time and to be honest I tell her it makes her sound stupid (no offense to your sister). I recorded her on tape once and that helped a little. She has curbed her usage to when it is just close friends and family. |

I hear it most when people have nothing else left to say . They can't make an argument to prove their point so they say Whatever. My sons have used it a couple times, but some of their girl friends use it alot...but it's usually in more of a disbelieving way like ... Oh , What-EVER:rolleyes: They even text it  so maybe it's an age thing...They are around 13-16 . It really doesn't bother me because it's not something I hear alot directed towards me....If I had to hear it all the time , I'm sure I would feel differently. |
I'm not fond of it, and do consider it very rude, unless used in fun. When joking with a friend and one or the other of us will say it with a laugh and a smile. But we both know it is being used in a joking way. Gracie Ruth has only said it once to me, that would have been right before she saw her very short life flash before her eyes. :p I was scolding her about something and she was back talking to me. She turned and walked away tossing her head back and forth and swishing her bum, still muttering under her breath. She stopped turn her head and looked over her shoulder at me, said, "Woof" (ie:Whatever) and proceeded to walk on. I got to her in about 2 steps, snatched her up, got right in her face and growled to her, "You will not talk to your Momma in that tone." I thought her eyes were going to pop out of her head. I put her down and she was all wiggly and yammering around me. lol She behaved herself...for the rest of the day anyway. |
I agree with all of you, I guess I'm getting old, but I absolutely hate the word, I think its very rude, not so much the word, but the tone in which its used, now, what about ...hellooooooo, that's another one that goes hand and hand with Whatever. |

it's ok!!! i totally like the way socks taste myself! but i just hope that people will still answer the whatever questions! :p because i am trying to do a little research so hopefully i can convince my sister and have her stop saying it to me all the time. it drives me nuts! and then she says that talking to me is like a chore! sigh~ sister love~ |
I agree that it is rude. It may be that the person has nothing more to say, but it is discounting the person's opinion that they are saying it to. Even if you disagree, it is better to say so than to just say "whatever". IMO |
Whatever = immature, unintelligent, and annoying! I remember saying it as a preteen. WHAT-eva! :p |
I find people use it here, one of my roommates uses it a lot - I find myself saying it too. But it is used in a different context then "What-eva!" It's used at the end of a sentence. Kind of like saying "or something like that" ie. "She started backtalking Johnny, she said "he has no common sense" or whatever" I tend to also use it when I'm really mad at my boyfriend, and he's trying to talk his way out of something he is clearly guilty of. "%$^& whatever" |
I think it is used when..... someone has been proven wrong but they don't want to admit it someone has to have the last word someone is tired of arguing and they know they will never agree on the subject But when a youngster is using it with their elders, it is disrespectful. But there is soooooooooo much disrespect out there now days. I find it appallaing the way kids talk to authority figures. |
Now of course, I'm picturing this word being spoken through the lips of a teenager with attitude complete with eye rolling...:p IMO, it's essentially a shortened way to say, "I have no knowledge of the subject or justifyable reason for my stance on the subject, yet I refuse to hear the other side." OR "I think you are an idiot and I refuse to continue to argue with you." |
I agree with BamaFan on her comments. 1. It is rude as a one word answer. 2. It tells me you have either not thought out your beliefs on the topic, don't care, or trying to end a loosing battle. I will never forget a supervisor in my doctoral courses used it with me. We were debating a topic and he told me "whatever"; mind you this is a professional topic and there is a right answer and this professor could not backup his argument. I was horrified that an adult 20 years my senior would tell me "whatever" to shut me down. I am a very non-confrontational person and don't often try to defend a topic but I knew I was right! That was probably about 15 years ago and I still remember his response so clearly...:thumbdown |
