Rilee & Me This is our first post in Yorkie Talk. I was so glad to find this forum. Rilee is my first Yorkie. She's almost 5 years old and we've had her since she was 10 weeks old. To say that she runs our house is an understatement! Rilee has very curly hair. She is pure-bred Yorkshire terrier. It's difficult to let her hair grow out, so we keep her in a puppy cut but hates to be groomed. Are curly haired yorkie's a common thing? I've never seen one until her. My problem is that she chews and scratches herself all the time. She is flea free, her coat and skin look great. We bathe her once a week with a mild natural shampoo and for a few days, she doesn't chew and scratch quite as much. She's on a natural dry food free of wheat, corn, or beef. But about half-way through the week, she starts to smell like frito corn chips, and the chewing comes back. Any ideas as to what I might look for? Does it hurt to bathe them more than once per week? Glad I found the site!!!! |
Welcome to you both. I bathe mine every 2-3 weeks. Cali has allergies but after all the tests and grain free diet we had to put her on a medicine called Atopica. This is the only medicine that has almost completely stopped the scratching. The vets could never determine what she is allergic to. I hope you can stop Rilee's scratching! |
Just want to say Welcome to YorkieTalk! Hope you like it here. I'm sure you will get plenty of answers to your problem, good luck! |
Welcome! Frito corn chips...hmmm...that is interesting! Hopefully someone will have some answers or advice for you. |
Welcome to YT:) |
Mollys fur gets curly and also matts badly if i let it grow too long, which is why i keep it short. Have you tried cooking for your pup to see if that makes a difference to the scratching? It might help you to experiment a bit and determine exactly what she is allergic to. |
Hello and Welcome to YorkieTalk! Sounds like you are getting good advice. I have heard some others on YT say that their furbabies' paws also start smelling like Fritos. Don't know why. But here is the link, in case you are interested. :) Anyway, we are glad you are here. :) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pol...ght=corn+chips |
welcome to YT! :D you might have to give her a bath less frequently if she has dry skin. is her skin flaky? try to give lots of treats before/after (during) grooming, so that your baby associate grooming with something positive. hopefully she will learn to tolerate it better. good luck! :) |
Wow, what great responses and so quick! Her skin looks great - no redness, no flaking, her coat is beautiful - just curly! When she was a year old, she was sick off and on and then it got so bad one time we thought she was going to die. I had her on canned dogfood, the expensive brand because I "thought" this was better. We took her to Vet and we decided to try her on a wheat, corn, grain, etc free diet and her symptoms stopped immediately. 4 years later, she has had not problems with that. The itching and scratching started about a year ago - and I can't pinpoint what is going on. Sometimes I wonder if it could be a nervous habit??? I think I'll take some of your advice and go in for an allergy test. I'll keep posting, thanks for your great advice. |
I think Yorkies are made from Fritos. I have heard that alot! LOL My pups paws smell like Fritos too! The food that you are feeding - does it have chicken in it? Sometimes dogs can be allergic to chicken too! Welcome to YT!!!!! |
Rilee Food HI, Yes, the food has chicken in it. It's called Nature's Recipe and I pay a fortune for it at our Petsmart - she has done so well on it. Maybe it could be the chicken? hmmm. Never thought about that. It also has barley and rice, but no beef, wheat or corn. We've got a vet visit next week. we'll see then. |
