Mika and Maya madness HELP I'll try to make a long story as short as possible Grown daughter lived with me here. We both were ready for a yorkie, so on a trip, I buy Mika (as an adorable tiny baby ), and bring her home. Daughter and I proceed to raise her together, and with the help of yorkie talk, she is a perfect yorkie at age 1. Daughter fulfills her destiny and moves to Atlanta, and wants to take her dog. Mother is heartbroken, Daughter raises Mika for last 9 months in Atlanta. Meanwhile, back in Memphis, mother is lonely and buys Maya. Maya is the perfect yorkie at this point (8 months,). Daughter is in love and moving to Japan with her guy, can't take Mika. They arrived last night to blend Mika back into the house with me and Maya. Problems Mika doesn't like Maya 100% She has snapped at my little one and seemed serious (our theory, she is still bonded to Amber and G, confused, establishing dominance????) Anyway, she also is pooping in the house, and peeing ,though she is trained. Mika weighs right at 9 pounds, Maya a whopping 3. Concerns: I'm worried about Maya's saftety Will this work Can I re-bond with Mika. (theory, when the daughter and son leave Mika will have to rebond with me and fit into our blended family....Dear God I pray) Ok yall what do you say. |
I am sure Mika will rebound with you . She needs time to re-adjust to your family . |
I had a picture for you, but the board won't load it, it used to allow direct links without a problem, but not today. |
It will take time. You need to establish dominance over both girls tho. Do not let Mika get away with being ugly to Maya. And be sure to not let Maya torment Mika. Take them both for walks together, just you and the 2 girls. This will help to bond them to you as a pack. Good Luck! |
Well, I don't know, but I sure hope so! I am picturing the Dog Whisperer here...WWCD? (What would Cesar do?) :D I think walking both dogs together is one thing he recommends. Don't let any instances go of Mika being nasty to Maya. Establish yourself as the "pack leader", especially with Mika, as she is trying to show dominance. It might be a natural tendency to try to win her over with love, but your being firm and authoritative is the best love you can give her now, and the other lovin' comes after that! :) Good luck! Two cuties for you! |
I think this is somewhat complicated because the older dog has a history with you and your house But if you introduce them slowly and correctly there shouldn't be a problem Have them both be on a lead bring them into a large room with one person with each do not put them face to face let them realize they are there if there is barking have them re-enter the door and start over if they are good treat them and then slowly bring them closer and closer I would have the older dog smell the rear of the younger dog since she was the one giving the problem That is a less intimidating intro for her The whole time have treats on hand |
The update is today has gone well. Mika is still making some potty errors, but we just got back from a threesome "walk" (note Miss Maya refuses to walk on her leash). The girls have had little to no snapping today, and are mostly running amuck playing all over the house, mostly the chase game. It's going much better than yesterday. |

Thank you so much...here is my fear.....MONEY....how can I possibly support two...food, grooming, vet bills, shots...on HALF the money I made when working. I just retired and how did this happen that I ended up with two???? |
By the way...adjustment is going VERY well now. Uncle Michael came over last night and talked to the girls and it helped a lot....he is the dog whisperer for Memphis :D |

What other interest do you have? Could you get a part time job working somewhere that you could really enjoy for some extra money. A book store, a fabric store, a coffee shop, dog walker, pet sitter, dog boutique, groomers, the vets? How about a Temp Agency working assignments as a receptionist? That way you sort of determine the times you work. My mom did temp work for many years after she retired and loved it. You don't get sucked into the whole office politics, you are only there a short time and then you move on to the next assignment. Or take a month or so off and travel, which is what my mom did. Look around, you may be surprised at what you can find. :) |

We talked about that yesterday,....but she never really ASKED for Mika, I did it, and then she really couldn't afford her either. Also she is moving to JAPAN with the love of her life, and that will be kinda a heartship on her. Japan is very expensive and she doesn't even have a job over there yet. |
