Do you think they can tell time? A friend of mine recently told me that she thinks dogs can't tell the difference between whether you leave them for an hour or 8 hours- do you think this is true? I know that Tobey mostly sleeps when I am gone but I have been feeling extra guilty since being back to work after the holidays and having to leave him home alone so much. |
I dont think they know how long your gone Since they sleep most of the time. But let's say At 8 you Give them a special treat They know Before 8 comes that 8 oclock is comming. Does that make sense lol JMO. |
I know that Tatum acts just as crazy excited to see me if I've been gone 10 minutes as if I've been gone 8 hours but as far as telling time, yes.... I swear it's so funny to watch Tatum get up on the back of the couch at the time the girls would be coming home on the bus and just wait for them. She knows what time they are supposed to be home and is always ready for them. My husband says she does the same for me in the evenings. She'll be just fine laying around or playing but at the time I should be home, she's watching and looking. |
Yes, they do know a few minutes from a few hours/days. If I go out to the mail box or to the store, they act like they always do, now when I leave to go visit mom for a few days, they are so excited when I get home(although hubby has been with them) and they go around in circles, and talk to me(if that makes sense), there is no way(even if it's late) I can go to bed until I spend anywhere from 30-60 min with them. So, have to agree with your friend on that one The 2 outside dogs know when it's 11:00 a.m and 5:00 pm. We let them run everyday at 11:00 and they eat at 5:00 and about 5 minutes until those times, they go to the gate and sit and start staring in the door. Dogs are not dumb like people seem to think they are. |
That's an interesting question. It reminds me of a book I read, "Why dogs know when their masters are coming home." I highly recommend the book. In there it talks about dogs - anything over 45 minutes is the same time....nap time! so - you go to work and come home for lunch - it is the same time to them as when you go to work and come home at 5ish. |
Obviously my pom can't tell time or she wouldn't be getting me up every night at 12 and 3!! But my girls know when it is time to eat and we have medicine time at 10 am every day since Cali and Maya are both on lifetime meds and if it gets a little past 10 they are all over me. |
I get up at 6:45-7AM each morning. If its 7:05 Chanel is yelping her head off for me to get her. Saturday and Sunday morning sleeping in is no more. Her nap times are always pretty much the same time. If I'm late coming home from work she is extra whiny when I pick her up as if saying I've been waiting and waiting and was soooooo worried you weren't coming. Breaks my heart. |
I think they can tell some time difference, but I don't know to what extent. I know they can tell time when it comes to feeding though, they will start whining almost to the minute they are fed every day! |
I think they do somewhat. Mine know what time we feed them, what time Daddy comes home and what time they go to bed |
I think they know days of the week too. My brother has this routine of taking his dogs in the truck with him every Sunday to get the paper and those dogs are up and ready to go before he is. I do think they know what time of day it is. Weather it's because of the light outside or what it is I don't know but Roxie always seems to know about what time everyone will be coming home and watching and listening. |
I was reading a very interesting book on dog behavior and according to the author's research, dog's biological clock is extremely accurate. They get tuned to when things are supposed to happen - when you are supposed to get home from work, when they eat, when they go for walks, and can "tell" the time these things are supposed to happen with in a few minutes during a 24 hour time period. I think there is a lot of truth in that and that many of our behaviorial problems stems from the dogs anxiety over things not happening when they are supposed to. One example he gave was that if you are supposed to get home from work at 6 pm - a few minutes before six the dog will start getting anxious. If you don't get home on time he will find something that smells strongly of you - perhaps your slippers, underwear, etc. and mouth them because they miss you, the later you are the more anxious he gets and will progress from mouthing to chewing. I haven't tested the theory, but it really sounds logical. I know that watching our small herd of horses, I can tell what part of the pasture they are in according to what time of day it is. |

Dogs can tell time I've own dogs all my life and can assure you of this, No worries though they like a routine . My Husband is usually home around seven pm, if it turns eight and he isn't home my little Juicee starts whimpering and pacing around the door. :D |

The dog's biological clock is extremely accurate. When They get use to their schedule, they know when it is time to eat, walk time, expecting you from work etc. They have an amazing instinct. For what it is to tell how long ,missiemiss is right on, anything over 45 minutes is the same time... They don't know how long it as been since you left. I have study dog breeding, behaviors and psychologies and that is what I have learn. BTW : I study at cyno.net costly but great school if you understand French. |
