Yorkie vs. Cat So I have never dated someone with a cat... And I feared the day would come that I did. And while I would not want someone to take me away from my pup I would never ask that of someone with there pet. I am now dating someone with a very large cat. However, I have been around her often enough to tell you she is so gentle. Her nails always clipped short. Even when purring or excited they come out I hardly feel them at all. You ask for kisses she rubs her mouth on yours and lays on you like a dog. I introduced my Diezel to her on 2 occasions. Both times were fine. They sniffed and just kind of studied each other. Diezel does not entertain other dogs let alone a cat so he just leaves her be as if she wasn't there. She however grew up with dogs and wants to be near him. She tried to promote some playing and Diezel barked. So she took a few minutes and came back flirted a little and then became submissive and layed on her back looking up at him. Again he barked not having a clue what she was doing. The remainder of the time they are near each other by not really.. still just kind of checking each other out. My question is how often should they be around each other before it may be safe to leave them alone? Its unfair to stay at one home more then the other and to divide the time is not that easy. Thanks for any advice... I finally stopped being so crazy and broke my no dating a cat person rule but I do not want him to get hurt either. Any help would be great :) |
Let the furkids be your guide. If kitty gets fed up with puppy, kitty will learn quickly to live "up", up out of reach of the dog. I was amazed at how well my dogs and cats get along. My boy cats get along great with my girl dogs. My girl cats could care less and act like the dogs are not even here. It sounds like you have a real sweetie in that cat. I say go for it, I suspect they will quickly become friends. |
I think it will be fine; especially since she is a gentle giant. Maybelline terrorizes Gracie and she will just jump up where Maybelline can't reach her when she gets tired of her harassment. |
I have 5 Siamese cats and 7 Yorkies . Never had a fight or a Yorkie yapping . The cats know how to be respected by the yorkies and the same the other way . |
Thanks everyone! This makes me feel alot better.. I was thinking to myself I finally found someone to make me happy and I was going to let my crazy way of thinking ruin it lol She really is a lovely cat.. and this is coming from a person who never cared for cats at all. I just hope he warms up to her because when I say he cares about anything unless a human I am not lying ha Maybe sometime in the future I will have a question regarding pee-pad vs. litter box LOL Thanks again! It should be fine as long as the cat has someplace 'safe' to go that Diezel can't get to her. Our older Yorkie learned real fast that there are a few pieces of furniture that the 'kids' can't get on and that he is safe from them up there. One suggestion about trying to get Diezel to like her better and maybe even start to play with her, is for you to be playing with her and when Diezel comes to investigate encourage him to join in. If he doesn't join in, sort of ignore him, his Yorkie curiosity will get the better of him and he'll want to be included. Have some treats with you and reward any good advances that Diezel makes. Lots of praise, and treats will go a long way in getting him to understand what you want. :) |
1 Attachment(s) Attachment 261111 I have 3 cats, a yorkie & a silky and they all get along. Glad to hear you are now a cat person :D:D;);) This is a photo of my Sadie, but she is bigger then the dogs :p:p so she can take care of herself |

That's almost a zoo! lol My puppy seems to get along with the one cat we have 75% of the time. Sometimes he gets way too hyper for her and she doesn't wanna play with him so she'll hiss and carry on, but I baby gate off the cat room so she knows where she can go when she needs to escape. A few times I've caught HER chasing HIM around the house and I laugh! The other kitty we have is a tubby tabby who wants NOTHING to do with Hiro. She has learned to live the 'high' life and hang out where Hiro can't get at her. I hope they all just get along one day and can't wait to see them all sleeping together on the couch! lol |
Well I have an older cat and a 3 year old yorkie. A yorkie will learn to respect a cat real quick..hehe.. My cat and dog play everynow and then by chasing each other but they will never be close buddies..LOL.. IF my boy gets to close to the Cat he will get slapped real quick. I think they will be okay. I don't think your Yorkie can hurt the cat and cats can jump and have a way of getting out of the way of these guys. Wheither it is slapping them quickly or just moving to a higher place. :D Good Luck |
My first Yorkie, Misty, was raised in a family with a large cat. We got her when she was around five. I think she thought all cats were the cat she was raised with. When we'd visit my hubby's sister, she'd run up to their cat and wag her little stubby tail as if to say, "Don't you remember me?" |

We have made it almost the full weekend with no real problems except for the food. The kittys dry food is out which she eats.. but if I leave out my pups she eats his also and guards it and wont let him eat. I do not know what to do about that since I usually leave his dry food out all day for him while Im gone. Other then that they arent playing but not fighting. We did wake up last night because of a yelp from Diezel but there were no scratches or signs of a fight so not to sure what went on. But everything else seems to be ok. Thanks again everyone :) |
Scary Cat My brothers big black cat attacked Bella. We were there for a Birthday Party and my daughter was holding Bella on her lap most of the day. Well she put her down with her leash on to take her outside for a walk. All of a sudden out of no where my brothers cat jumped at her with her claws out and started smacking her (hissing and spitting). My daughter panicked and froze. My husband reached down and picked her up. She was shaking horribly. She had a few minor scratches on her that we found later on. We have a big black cat called Bad Kitty (appropriately named). He and Bella are best friends. I think Bella saw by brothers cat and thought it was his friend Bad Kitty. But his cat just flipped out on her (they don't have a dog). Needless to say Bella will not be going there anymore.:aimeeyork |
