Yorkies in cold weather Hello...I am new to your group. I have a three year old female yorkie. We live in southeastern Ontario...when I take her outside after a pretty short period of time she appears to hobble and then it seems she is having real difficutly walking. This is the first winter she has done this. When we come inside she appears to be fine running around as usual. Does anyone experience this? Thoughts? Thanks |
I can relate. I live in Iowa and it gets VERY cold and snowy in Iowa. My dogs will "Get busy" faster outside when they go out. For that I am grateful because it is darn cold. They handle it well if it s 15-32 degrees F. Once it gets colder my little male will hobble. He can't go as far and I have to watch him because I need to go get him after he gets busy. Keep a sweater on them when they go outside. Remember, our babies have hair like we do and some are thicker than others. If you went outside without a coat on and just a thin layer of hair you would be cold too! I know some people use giggie booties. I have not done that yet because they are quick to go out and get back in. When it is snowy we "snow blow" a path or maze in the back yard so they don't have to go far into the snow. Good luck. Keep her warm!!!! |
It sure is cold down here isn't it? I find Layla walks weird sometimes because she is so bundled up :p and she HATES the cold- and i'm sure it is so cold on their little feet... just make it fast and make sure she is bundled up tight. |
Hi! :wavey: Welcome! :welcome4: :yorkiesar Although it gets cold here in Texas :lol tears it's nothing like what you get. (Thus one of the reasons I live in Texas!! LOL) My two youngest (both under 1 year) don't seem fazed by the cold at all, but Boo (6 yrs old) hates it. It does seem odd that she is just now showing this behavior, but perhaps with her being more mature now the cold just is getting to her more. I agree with trying to bundle her up a little more. I'm not sure if booties would be the answer if she's only out for a few minutes, but it might be something to consider. |

Lola hates the cold almost as much as I do! This week our daily highs will only be single numbers. Nights as low as -30*!! I put both a sweater and coat on her. I also keep a good area free of snow for her. She still shivers poor thing! She doesn't tend to waste any time doing her business! |
I tried booties, both of my yorkies HATED them and one loved to be dressed up! That happens to my girlies too, but more so the older one that just passed away a few (devastating :()months ago. Her feet were extremely cold and it was uncomfortable for her to walk. Rock salt kills their feet too, really bad so if it's when its snowy -maybe that's it? if it's just when it's cold, its probably a combination of the cold on their body and feet. Try the booties, it can't hurt!! The reason yorkies get so cold is because unlike a lot of dogs, they have little to no hair on their bellies - I read a long long time ago that they also have less strands of hair from each folicle then most dogs. Other dogs will have several, where a yorkie may have two - sounds logical, not sure if it's true. |
I live in NW IN, and it is frigid here right now. My solution was to have PocoMutt make my girls snowsuits last year with the little feet attached. They are satin lined, because my girls are in full coat, hence no matting whatsoever, and they come running to me, to get their snowsuits, before my hubby takes them out. They love the snow, and the snowsuits have allowed them to romp and play in the snow, like never before! They stay toasty warm! Sheila |
Yorkieville you NEED to post a pic of that on here!!!!! PLEASE!!!!! I'm dying to see it! |

I'll do that, as soon as the frigid temps come up a bit. It's below zero here right now. Yesterday morning, I came home from mass, and Hubby said to me, "I wish you could have seen your baby (Kia) she put her little paw up on a snowbank and was taking a few licks of the snow". |
