Why is he so vindictive? Brutus is pee pad trained for the most part but he seems so spiteful at times! Sometimes we'll be playing or just hanging out together and I'll get up and leave him to do something and he'll pee on the floor instead of the pad. It's usually in the same spots but it's driving me crazy! Last night my kids were eating and he decided to poop right by my daughter's chair and when she got down she stepped in it! It was pretty gross! :eek: And the other day we all went out and I put him in the laundry room where he has all his stuff and when we came home It looked like it snowed but of course it was his chewed up pad! He had pieces of the pad all over including his eyes, nose, head, body you name it. He doesn't even think it's bad because there he was wagging his little tail greeting us at the door! What's up with this behaviour? How can I make it stop?:confused: I have to add he doesn't do this ALL the time and he's really not left alone very often. |
Dogs are neither spiteful nor are they able to lie. They do what they do as it gives them something they want and desire. Like attention or food or cuddles. When we look at them as being out to get something it is a human emotion or thought and not dog like at all. |

What you see is what you get so Take a look at what he is getting as a reward for doing his business other then where you want. Then reward more and better for doing it on the pee pad. |
I agree. I don't think they "know" how to do something wrong to "get back at you" so to speak. Their actions are pure and while they strive to please, they need to be guided just like a small child. Your small baby does not know how to be vindictive, but they need constant guidance, training and instruction to learn proper behavior. If he is over a year old and already fully trained then I would be concerned and maybe seek the advice of a behaviorist, but I think he is just making "mistakes" at this point because he is young. |
Okay I wasn't really being literal when I said he was "spiteful". But yes in MY opinion he knows what he's doing is wrong since he only does this when I leave him alone. Anyway I just posted to find out how to stop this. Any advice? |
For peeing off the pad, don't leave him unsupervised so he has an opportunity to go. Tether him to you (tie leash to belt loop) and take him with you or assign him to another member of the family. This would work for the pooping by the dinner table too. He needs to be watched so you can "catch him int he act" and correct it. As for chewing up the wee wee pads...buy the frames they have for these and he cannot chew them up. Hope this helps. Good luck. |
Catch him being good and peeing on the pad. Really whoop it up so he get all the attention for going on the pad and do not show any responce to not going on the pad just clean it up. I even take him out of the room and not let him see you clean it up. Just make it disapear. He is getting s responce that he needs from you be not peeing on the pad. I am not sure what it is as I am not there but what ever you do when he makes a mistake change that action and no responce. |

That is it act like you never saw it and make sure when you do you consintrate (SP) on your body reaction to as well as verbal. It is to be a nonevent no responce. Dogs pick up changes in our movements before we even feel them. a total no big deal responce is needed. do not let him see you do tidy up as he gets a responce even nonverbal. I know that you do not yell at him but these guys are smart they pick up on the nonverbal better then the verbal somtimes. |
Also make sure you use some kind of odor remover on his accidents. You said that he always pees in the same spot and that is probably do to the fact the scent is there and they like to go where they've gone before. I would imagine pooping by the dinner table was an attempt at attention. To dogs and most people if they crave attention negative or positive will work just the same. He was happy about distroying his pee pad because he probably looked at that has killing something just for you. I used to have a dog that would bring me dead mice and he'd be so proud of himself. Also when they're bored they tend to make there own entertainment and I'm sure destroying that pad was a blast. |
