Help Needed!! I'm new to this...so I hope I am posting in the right place! Hello! My name is Kim and I live in North Tonawanda, New York--a suburb of Buffalo. My precious little Yorkie baby girl is named Versace (Sachie for short) who is about to have her 4th birthday coming up soon. Unfortunately..my sweetie is in the animal hospital right now. Which is what has prompted me to find a chat site of other people who have Yorkie babies. When I came home from work, Sachie was acting very strange. Not her happy go lucky self. She started to throw up white bile, but then the vomit turned into bright red blood! Imagine how frightening that is to see your 3 1/2 lb. dog throw up bright red blood! I immediately took her to the emergency animal hosp. I thought that they would do an xray of her stomach for find something she must have eaten (however nothing was apparent in the house). The doctor right away suggested blood work and suspected Pancreatitus. Lab results came back that she was right--Sachie's levels were 4000 when normal is 1800. Pancreatitus is caused by fatty foods. My hubbie did give Sachie a small piece of cheese, and my son also indulged her with a small piece of pupperoni treat. We normally do not give her table scraps (only occasionally) and we don't over do on treats either. She is a very tiny dog by nature and is a good weight for her size. However..I didn't realize that Yorkies tend to be prone to Pancreatitus--so absolutely NO table food or fatty treats can be given to her. She must be on a bland diet. My question is...does anyone else out there have the same situation or know of anyone with the same problem and what kind of bland food product should I purchase for her? This emergency doc said that they will give her a bit of ID food possibly tonight. Is this something she should stay on? Whatever she gets...my lab will eat too so I have to keep that in mind. The two dogs eat together and refuse to eat something different--i've tried it and it is fighting a losing battle. Sachie thinks she is missing out on something if she is getting something different!:) Tonight her temp is coming back up (yay!!), she is on heavy pain medication (boo!) and is resting. She has stopped vomiting and had a small stool today that did have old blood in it--so she is getting it out of her system. Depending on her levels, she may be able to come home tomorrow AND if she eats and keeps it down. The doc doesn't think that she has any other organ damage from this, but it can't be completely ruled out without a full blood screen. She will be prone to this now--so I have to make changes. What does anyone suggest? Thank you!! |
I sure hope your baby gets better. Sorry I don't have any advice, have never had that happen to my dogs. Keep us posted. Paula |
My Yorkie has had pancreatitis also but it wasn't nearly that bad. All people food isn't bad. In fact, that is all Ellie gets. Pupperoni shouldn't have triggered this. Maybe the cheese did but lots of Yorkies eat bits of cheese. It doesn't have to be triggered by food at all but if it is, it is usually fatty meat. The only test that I know of to diagnose pancreatitis is the SNAP or Spec cPL. What test was it that confirmed the problem? Lipase level? That isn't conclusive. It is very likely pancreatitis though. If your Yorkie has to be on a prescription food, your healthy dog should not be. The I/D is probably very restricted in fat which wouldn't be good for the other dog. I'm guessing the vet will keep the Yorkie on the I/D for awhile because it seems to work well for this. Then you may be able to go to a lower fat food from the store. Depending on what percentage of fat your vet wants Sachie on, your other dog may be able to eat it too. |
I really do hope your baby get's better. Give em a big kiss from me. :kiss3: |
I'm sorry I don't know anything about this, but I just wanted to say that I hope Versace continues to get better and is able to come home tomorrow! :) |
Welcome to YT. I am so sorry that such a horrid problem brought you to YT - but I am glad you found us. How is Sachie today? I pray she is improving. YT is an excellent site full of valuable information. You may want to use the search option located in the dark blue bar above (the beginning of the line says "user cp" and search is over to the right - 3 from the end) Type in Pancreatitus & it should pull up a slew of information. You can also search directly in our health & diet section on this topic & in the sick/emergency section. |
