collars vs. harnesses this is probably a stupid question but can collars hurt yorkies necks. i read that they have delicate throats so i have never put a collar on my mia, just a harness. but she gets so excited when the door opens i am afraid my grandchildren might let her out and if she had a collar with a tag that might help if she gets out and i can't catch her. i never realized how quick yorkies are. |
Both my girls wear a collar with a tag on for that exact reason but I NEVER use it to walk them on or to restrain them because like you said they have delicate throats. I always used a harness for walking. |
Yes, they are very quick ! I live in a upstairs apartment, and Suzi is always at the door greeting people. She does not go far . I do not use collars on her either, but have put her tags on her harness when going outside. :aimeeyork |
I don't use collars. Put tags on the harness where leash attaches. I use the Guardian Gear two-step harness. |
The harness is the way to go. Their throats are so delicate that a collar might choke them or hurt them. |
I only use my silk harness from chattiesmom. I think a yorkies throat is far too delicate for a collar. Even if you aren't using the collar to walk them with, it could get caught on something. |

collars inside??? I also plan on using a harness when I get my Yorkie. I have mixed feelings about leaving collars on while he/she is inside. They are good if they ever do run out the door since they have tags..but also what if they get caught on something. That really scares me. How does everyone feel about that?? |
Both my boys wear collars with I.D. tags, Rabies and their liscenses on them in case they would get out. Baron is also micro-chipped. When I walk them I always use a harness. My Vet recommended them because small dogs can have Trachea problems. This works for us...:D :aimeeyork and:animal36 |
I take Barons collar off when he's in his crate. So he does not choke and he loves to chew on his tags!! Sammy is not crated and wears his collar all the time...Hope this helps. Sorry to post twice, It's 2 a.m. here!!!:D |
I only use a harness. I used a collar for walks at first but felt bad because it's just not natural and prob kind of annoying not to mention painful when she runs at something and jerks me with her, straining her neck. I like to just let her be free. :) |
I keep the harness, with tags, on my guys 24/7. Even brush them twice daily with harness on. The only time I take the harness off is for a bath. I'd leave it on for the bath too, but I wrote my phone number (permanent marker) on the harness, & don't want it to wash off. At first I was concerned about leaving them on full time. So, I monitored the guys closely. Fit is very good, & comfortable. |

Johnny wore a cat-collar with a bell when we first got him because he was so quiet and we didn't know he was underfoot.:cat4: I believe their necks are so tiny that collars could hurt but when going to obedience school, they must wear a collar, some schools even require a slip or "choke" collar. For walks and obedience work, putting the collar on sets the tone for following commands. It's the only time Johnny wears a collar. By the way, the only harness he hasn't chewed is a Puppia! |
