adding a new yorkie As long as the vet check goes well I'll be getting a new yorkie next week. I currently have a 9 month old (spayed) female, and we will be getting a male puppy this time. Does anyone have any advice for introducing a new family member? Are there any issues with adding a male versus another female? I've never had two dogs at once, so any advice would be appreciated...thanks! |
Depends on how possessive your female is of you and her surroundings It will help both ways if the male your bringing in is a puppy rather than an older dog Because if he's older there will be testosterone issues to deal with Your female will probably be bewildered for a day or two not knowing what her response should be Don't push the new puppy on her Let them explore each other as they need to If he's a puppy he's going to make a bee line for your other dog He's going to want her to play with him and she may not like that if you notice her trying to get away from him distract the puppy let the older dog become curious If she comes looking around let her smell his behind... while you hold him because he's going to want to maul her but try to remember ... this is the older dog's domain this new dog is coming into and you want to make the intro as drama-less as possible |
I'll be honest. I've never had trouble introducing new dogs into the family. At one time I had 9 dogs some Pits, and a boxer, and then I introduced a minature poodle, and last my Yorkie. Of course I introduced them one at a time. I have a back porch with doors from the house to the porch, and the first day I would keep the new dog on the porch, and the others in the house so they could see each other, and realize there was a new member. I would introduce the small dogs first, so they could become buds. I would just put them down, and let the smell each other watch them closely and in a day they be friends. The big ones I kept on a leash until I was sure everything was cool. I don't think you'll have any problems introducing your male to your female. It's always easier with two different sexes. I think the only thing you need to do is the first day is have them in two different places where they can see and smell each other, and the next day I'd try letting them just meet each other. Sorry this was so long, but that's how I did it. |
Some good advice here already. Just a couple of things to add. It would be best if you could introduce them on neutral ground. Let them sniff and get to know each other for a little while somewhere other then home. Then your girl won't think she has to protect her territory right off the bat. Don't let your girl dominate the puppy. YOU are the pack leader, all others must get along and obey you. I always let Boo say no to the puppies when he's had enough play, but he is never allowed to be mean to them. A growl to tell them I'm done playing is ok, a growl to tell them to get away from my momma, space, blanket, etc... is not. At the same time I don't allow the puppies to continue to bother him if he's told them enough. Walks. Walks are the best and fastest way to get them to bond as a pack. It was what broke the ice with Boo when Gracie Ruth came and then later Yogi. So do you best to find times and places (if the weathers bad) to walk as a pack. And last of all, PICTURES! Please post pictures of your cuties when you can. :D |
