bonnielynn | 01-06-2009 04:10 PM | help! socialization 101 A friend is visiting from out of town and brought her new (16 weeks) maltipoo with her. I thought "what a great opportunity for Atticus to socialize" especially since the dogs are nearly the same size. The introduction has been a disaster. I didn't know Atticus (now 1 yr) would react so poorly. We didn't get him until he was 13 weeks so he had early socialization as a puppy. He was the runt of the litter and, therefore, dominated by his bigger brothers and sister. Here's the gist of the problem. Atticus will share food, treats and toys without much trouble but if the very friendly puppy attempts to play or comes too close, Atticus will growl, bark and snap (he has not bitten the puppy, yet). Atticus is clearly reacting out of fear and territorial instinct. What do I do to help him to relax and become better socialized? My friend will be here for a couple of more days. Should I continue to try? |
