Question about behaviour.... Hello! I have two 1 1/2 year old shihtzus. Last Saturday, we picked up our 8 month old yorkie. When we got our shihtzus, they were just 6 weeks old and from a breeder (I know, TOO YOUNG). They were very playful and feared nothing. Our little yorkie has been here for a few days...and is afraid of everything. She is the cutest little thing but jumps when she hears a noise, runs away when you bend down, put your hand out, just about anything. If I want to pick her up, she will run away and run a million miles an hour. I turned on the vaccum yesterday and I she shook so badly that I turned it off. The breeder has a kennel....away from her home. The nursery and dogs are kept at the kennel. I guess she has not had much human contact.....does this sound like normal behaviour for an 8 month old yorkie? Are yorkies nervous little dogs? |
Congratulations on your new puppy! Yorkies can be nervous little dogs! We brought Wrigley home at 12 weeks and she isn't too bothered by the vacuum or other household noises, but she's 2 1/2 yrs old now and she is still runs from us when we bend down to pet her or try and pick her up! Now if we are sitting, she wants to be in our laps 24/7, but she's funny if we are standing and reach over to pet her. Camden we rescued at 2yrs. old last April and she is freaked out by every household noise, blender, vacuum, disposal, etc... She also lived in a kennel away from the house and we figure she just never heard any of those noises before. She's getting a little bit better after 9 months, but she still runs and hides in her "safe place" as we call it. She shakes alot and is very nervous when people come into our house and/or yard. So part could be the breed and part could be lack of socialization. She may come around in time on some of it, once she gets used to hearing things on a regular basis, but part may just be her personality! Good luck! |
Just be patient and your yorkie will come along just fine. She's just not use to things right now. Give her time. Good luck!:animal36 |

I agree, just give her some time and let her get use to things in your home. Boo is afraid of all loud noises, so before I turn on anything I'll tell him, "Boo, Momma's going to make a loud noise now." and that helps. He'll know it's coming and it won't surprise him. Try to associate good things happening when people come over. Annie was fearful at first too. I had a treat jar near the door and whenever anyone would come in I'd have them grab a few treats to give to her. She got to were she enjoyed company. The running when you bend over, Gracie Ruth would do this, too. Again, with treats in hand, I'd call her to come to me and usually tried to be sitting or kneeling down so that I didn't seem so big and scary. Never call her to come to you to discipline her. I also won't call G to come to me when it's bath time. She hates baths, so I'll just walk over to the treat jar and she'll follow. After giving her a treat I'll just pick her up and head to the bathroom. A little sneaky, yes, but at least she doesn't associate following the command to Come with something bad happening. Come here always means something good. |
I'm sure he'll get better as he adjusts to the new household. :) Although some dogs are just nervous by nature. Our Yorkie is fearless but our doberman is a chicken. She's scared of everything from the yoga ball to the broom. She's had tons of socialization since she was a pup. It's just part of her personality. :rolleyes: |
It sounds like she might not have been very socialized with people and new experiences very much until now She will likely come around but you'll need to help her come out of her shell When you bring her to new places or when new people come into the house you'll have to do it slowly Praise her and give her treats when she doesn't run and hide and be there for her but don't be the doteing Mom |
I think it's lack of socialization too. She will come around! :) I don't think it's the breed because my 15 week Yorkie is FEARLESS, and has been since I brought her home at 7 weeks. She doesn't back down to anything! I just hope that she doesn't get herself into trouble. |
After months of looking for a yorkie ... and then finally becoming a mom to one, it ended. Little Mia came to our home and things didn't go too well. My male shihtzu was better than I had thought but my little female was not happy at all. She got very sick last week and was in the hospital. They tested her and she tested positive for giardia and was soooo sick. They kept her in and did all kinds of tests, x-rays, etc....and my vet felt that the stress of having this new puppy was adding to her illness. The breeder that we got Mia from was really nice and new of my concerns introducing a third pyppy into our home. We ended up taking Mia back to the breeders vet, had her treated and tested for giardia. Mia has gone to another home that has one other yorkie. My little girl Lexy is back at home, finished her medication for giardia and is now on tylesine for two weeks. After the two weeks, they are going to possibly start testing for iriitable bowel (doing a biopsy on her bowel). So thank you to everyone that helped me make my decision to get a little yorkie....unfortunately, it was short-lived.:( |
