dashing thru door any suggestions on how to train NOT to dash thru Front Door when I open? abbey is 5 months old |
Sure .... This is door training Go by the door and say wait Give her a treat Do it again and start to open the door the minute she goes to bolt .... Close it Good Girl and give her a treat keep repeating that again and again until she stays It might take a while  But she'll get the idea |
In addition to saying "wait" I wave my index finger back and forth as a hand signal. Katy is 8 months old and is good about half the time about this. We practice this using the door leading to the garage when the garage door is closed. Because we have the two young puppies we had to put a step-over gate at the front door as a precaution because the front door leads to the street. |

I have trained my three to only use the back door to go outside. This way when someone comes to the from door I don't have to fight them. My suggestion would be do everything that the others suggested but to only use the back door to go outside. It's the same in the car, they are only allowed in and out of one door in the car as well. I also make them sit and stay when I open the back door to go outside. |
Teaching "wait & stay" as instructed is one of the best things Winston has ever learned...not only at the door but for food, treats, toys...everything. Repetition is the key...start at a door that only opens to a safe area, just in case. Then move on to other things...eventually include the doors that are used most often and used rarely. It only takes one time for an accident to happen...be prepared!!! |
