Im not a regular breeder but I just went thru the this with my Yorkie mom. I had to handfeed the pups. Hopefully you want have to use this but better be safe then sorry. You can purchase formula from the vet (or stores but Im not sure of the quality at the stores) They should have liquid and powder. We started off with the liquid as it was easier to deal with then later went to powder. The baby bottle caused a couple pups to aspirate so we stuck with syringes. If the pups become weak you may try just a dab of corn syrup on the gums and make sure they stay warm. I cannot stress enough to have any emergeny kit available (can find on several websites each has different ideas) me I combined and made my own including something to make a homemade incubator. I had to use some of it unfortunately. Oh, and definitely read up on the puppy CPR. Also some sort of scales that can weigh that little. It is very important to keep there weight monitored throughout. Hope this helps. Good Luck |
There are many milk replacers you can buy. 'Just Born' comes pre-mixed and is available at our Wal-Mart. It can be a little rich for some newborns though. Another good choice would be goat's milk. It's very digestible and not as likely to cause stomach upset. Honestly, getting through the whelping is what she should be focusing on now. Hopefully your sister is prepared for that. If you have any questions regarding that, you should post them in the breeders' forum. Best of luck. |
