Strange allergy? Hello, Yesterday we brought home an 11 week old lil girl Yorkie to join our 4 year year old lil boy Yorkie. Ever since I first came in contact with her and each time since, I get weezy and now the top of my throat is starting to hurt and my eyes and neck itch. I know Yorkies are non-allergenic, so I cannot be allergic to the puppy herself. I'm wondering if it could be the shampoo the breeder used or something in the breeder's home that might be lingering on the puppy. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! |
i don't know. my step-dad is allergic to dogs, cats and horses and that was one of the main reasons i got a yorkie and for the first week, whenever he was around the dog... his throat began itching and he was sneezing, etc but after a week... he was fine. |
:welcome4: to YT!!! I am not certain...and I hope there are others on here who may be of help to you. It may well be something from the breeders home or what they used for washing.....I recall when I bought my first small dog (a Shih-tzu many years ago), I would itch all the time playing w/ him that first day. I took him to the vet and groomer.....after a good grooming....it was better...and after a while (a few days or so), and washing him at home, everything was fine. So....I would try washing her with a good dog shampoo (I like Buddy Wash and PetSilk and SheaPet) or take her to a groomer for a good bath. My mother is allergic to animals.....even when she comes over to our house, her eyes will get watery, etc. I don't know if it is our labs or our yorkies??? It is something that she can stand...and not severe....but I just hate it that she does it. :( You may want to check out the grooming section here also...might be some good tips there too that may be helpful. And if all else....you can ask the vet or your doctor too. |
Unfortunately, some people are very allergic to yorkies. Actually a poodle is the best dog to get if you're allergic to dogs. This is an article I found online Allergies are not a direct result of too much hair, and even dogs with fur like human hair can cause allergies. The sebaceous glands are the culprit. Dogs, like other animals and humans, secrete an oily lubricant (sebum) through their sebaceous glands, which keeps their skin supple and their coat (hair) shiny. The allergen in the secretion causes the allergic reaction and is present in dog’s saliva and dander. As a dog ages and the skin dries, more sebum is produced and the scaly bits of dried skin are released, resulting in dander (or dandruff in humans). It’s important to be careful when buying a puppy because you might not have an immediate allergic reaction. Puppy’s skin is supple and sebum isn’t released so they have no dander, but, you might eventually get an allergic reaction as the puppy ages and dander forms |
Thanks for the replies! I have never had any animal allergies. Our 4 year old Yorkie has never bothered me. We also have a 9 year old lab and he has never bothered me. So I'm thinking it has to be the shampoo they used (Pantene) or something from their house. I don't think I could be allergic to one Yorkie but not the other. |

Even though yorkies are "hypo allergenic" some people can still be allergic to them and for multiple reasons. It could be dandruff, saliva, etc. It is possible you could be allergic to one and not the other because of their make up. Before freaking out though, I would maybe try to bathe her in the shampoo you bathe your other dogs in and see if anything changes. My BIL has dog allergies really bad and the breeder he got his havanese told him to bathe his dog in his shampoo for awhile to see if he is allergic to the dog. |
When we got our 1st Yorkie I started having severe allergy problems and thought it was a reaction to the dog. I was on breathing treatments and inhalers. It turned out that Lexi was being fed Pedigree by the breeder. One of the ingredients in Pedigree is Marigolds (and if I touch Marigolds I break out into a rash). Sounds silly I know, but we changed Lexi's food and the problems went away within a few days. |
I would try contacting thew breeder first and see what she used to bathed the puppy and the food the puppy was eating. It could be a number of things. Besides being allergic to the Yorkie itself. :aimeeyork |
I'd give your new baby a good bath with some good shampoo...not people shampoo. It could dry out your baby's skin and then that's another problem. Try that first! ~Kathy:animal-pa |
