Would you supplement this puppy? Hi, I have a litter of puppies which started as 6. One died after a short period of time and was the first born she was extremely tiny and had breathing difficulties. The puppies are 4 days old and 4 are doing great. Very energetic and fat, the 5th baby girl i have had to hold on the boobie since day one. She seems a bit stronger but absolutely no weight gain in the last two days.........stays at 4 ozs. Should I supplement her also? I am scared to death she will aspirate fluid.........I dont want to replace mothers milk, I just needed some insight as to whether you would give her some replacement milk too? Any info or ideas would be much appreciated THank you!!!! |
I am no breeder...but i think that might be a good idea.Of course the mother's milk is the main thing the puppy needs, but some orfan puppies drink only the replacemente milk and turn out ok....i would definetly offer both, just in case so she can get a little stronger and eat by herself. |
Thanks Babbie! She did fine..........I used an insulin syringe and just dripped it and she started licking it......., she didnt take much but she did take some.... |
Glad to hear she is doing better! :o Keep us posted as to how they are doing! Good Luck :o :o |
Little girl still hasnt gained anything. Still at 4 1/2 oz at one week. She weighed 3 when born. She was so weak she could only latch on and drink if I held her on, then in a couple days, she latched on and was strong enough to stand and even keep latched on if one of the stronger puppies tried to knock her off. Even though she hasnt gained a thing, shes stronger, I cant believe it today she has been caught 3 times on the boobie alone, before she couldnt get to it. ........SO this is very good news! ......But why isnt she gaining weight??????? I have only been supplementing a couple times a day because Im still afraid of her aspirating. I think I will touch base with my vet tomorrow and see what he thinks. |
I don;t have any experience with that...breeding to me is a new thing, only say rescue puppies :) I hope it is nothing serious...let us know how she is doing!! |
One of my mother in laws dogs had pups a couple of years ago,and the mother rejected one of the babies straight away.We bought a puppy bottle at our vets which had 3 different sized teets, and hand fed her..she was fine:) Its better to use a proper puppy feeding bottle because its just like their mothers teet, its alot harder for them to breath in any fluid this way because when they have finished, they just stop sucking, with a seringe the puppy has no control over the flow of the milk and this can be dangerous.Iv also seen tube feeding done (a long thin tube is forced down the throat of the puppy and in to its tummy, then with a seringe the puppy is fed without needing to suck) but I think this is for really weak puppies which cant feed on their own.I wuld go with the bottle method..you should be able to get one at a pet store or at your vets.GOOD LUCK!:) |
Thanks Chelsi!........Im sure you are right.....she is able to suck so a bottle would do the trick I think......I think I will invest in a tube feeder too, due to the fact I had one puppy to weak to suck, but she was born with severe breathing problems....I think she was in the canal to long. She may not have made it anyway but if I had a feeder well maybe Id have her today. Hugs |
I bought a bottle for my baby girl and boy does she go to town! Thanks Chelsi! Maybe she will gain some weight now. I dont know if Ill be able to ever sell this baby........whaaaaaaa I was gonna try to get a pic but my batteries went dead on my digital. Awwww!!! Im SO glad the bottle is working for her:) Im sure sheŽll be fine! Keep us posted on how she is,I have faith in this little one:) |
GREAT NEWS! 1/2 oz gain. She raises her belly off the doggy pad and stands?? Her litter mates cant do this but keep in mind they are very fat! This will be very interesting watching her grow..........I dont breed for tinies, but she is little and when all said and done after feeding her very well she may be 10 lbs........lol. She isnt out of the woods yet but I feel better, and I know she does. Her mother is 9 lbs, daddy is 4 1/2 lbs. Satins puppies are all over the scale. I thank all of you very much for your support! It is very nice to share this babies story with you. |
