My dog thinks everyone loves her! What can I do? Hey everyone, I haven't been on in a while because we've moved and what not. But I have a question about my Yorkie, Diva. When she's at home, she's fairly mellow. But when company comes, it's a game changer. She jumps on them RELENTLESSLY. (And she has some SERIOUS hops! She's jumped to people's waists!) Because she's small, most people think it's cute and they allow it, but for those who don't care for dogs, I have to make her "go home" (Put her in the crate) so they're comfortable. She also gets so excited when she licks them that it's almost like snapping. She doesn't bite, but she looks like she will. I don't wanna lock my baby up whenever people come! Any ideas? |
Yes, you keep her on a leash. :) You also can ask a friend if she or he would help you with some training. Keep her on the leash, have a friend come to the door and then restrain her from jumping......(saying down)..... and also praising her for doing so at the same time...... TREATS work well for this!!!! After a few times, you will notice that she is not as excited.... Dogs LOVE to please. You will want to keep a treat jar near the door and continue to do this.......... eventually she will get it! Good Luck! |
It all comes down to training. I would get a good friend that is patient and have them knock at the door. Naturally she's gonna get all excited, so you show her a treat and make her sit and stay. When she is calm, yell for your friend to come inside. Keep showing her the treat. When they walk inside, have her keep staying like that and after a few seconds, give her the treat. Keep repeating. Do NOT tell her to sit and stay before your friend knocks... I learned that on "It's me or the dog" and I can't remember the reason, but it teaches a bad habit. So now on to following my own advice! |
Ashley's got it right! You need to reward the calm behavior and head off or ignore the bad treat her when she is calm and have the person you enlist to help you immediately leave when she starts her jumping up It's going to take a while so find someone who is fairly patient |
At least your only jumps up to their person's waist... Smokey can jump all the way up to my head (I'm 5') and normal people's shoulders.:D |
Thanks y'all! I'll have to try it out with someone. I would do with my husband but she's used to him lol |
