I understand how you feel..I used to feel like that when I was living in a really small apartment and my Yorkie looks bored sometimes. Like you, I was home most of the time too...I am only out like 2-3 hours in a week..What I did was bring him out a little more often even if its short. Sometimes when I have the time, I bring him further and meet more people outside. I even trained him to take ttc (our public rail transport here). Then when it was warmer, I let him go to the balcony with me watching him and he loves to just sit there and smell and listen to the outside world. I also dogsit for my friends and bring him along with me. Sometimes they come over to play. Don't feel like your dog is better off with other people..I know sometimes they get very excited when they see new people/dogs but they are not like that with you..it doesn't mean they are not happy being with you! They are just probably being contented and being themselves. Edited to add: You can also bring him for a car ride and just train and expose him to different things to let him learn. That will enrich his life. |
I think maybe as long as you're getting him outside at least a couple of times for walks/play/exercise a day & he has plenty of toys around the house for inside stimulation, I'm sure he's completely satisfied. Oh, and of course, I'm also for getting another yorkie or playmate too ;) Bottom Line is as long as you're giving him all the unconditional love & attention he gives you, that's all he needs!!:D |
I bet he loves having you all to himself! I have two, and I am retired and they sure seem to enjoy that I'm always home now. Maybe just set some time aside each day to play with him for awhile. Mine love to play fetch and tug of war. Or, take him for walks. Both of mine love kids, and I have four grandchildren. They are always excited when the kids come over because that means more attention lol. But, as much as they love the kids, I think they are equally glad when they leave. They get worn out, and they seem to like their normal routine each day. Plus, they miss their "mommy time" where they just cuddle with me. I definitely wouldn't rehome him, especially if you love him. I'm sure he's happy with you, he just likes all that extra attention from others....they are attention hogs lol |
Here is what I would do in your situation..........take him out in the morning and the evening for at least a mile walk each time and increase the distance a little each week till your up to a couple of miles each time. Next I would either find a play-date group or start one so he has other tiny dogs to play with once a week. Generally the moms all take turns having it. Then once a week at your family's home. Then if you have any other free time, take him to Petco or Petsmart and just brouse. No way will he be bored if he has all this to do all week. ;) |

PAWS (where I got my kitten/cat from) adoption fees for cats is only $40 (includes age appropriate shots, spaying/neutering, and microchipping). Not sure if they still do it, but you can get the rest of its shots done for $5. :) |
I have 4 dogs and do not work and the 3 yorkies play together and snuggle together, but Roxie my youngest, 15 months old seems bored a lot too. You can just see her looking for something to get into. I will try and throw toys or keep her busy. I am going to start working with her on some obedience to keep her busy. She is the first yorkie I have had that seems bored so I know what you mean, but I would not think of giving her up. Hopefully you can find some fun things for her to do. |
I would try finding him a little buddy. I woudn't reccomend a baby, because they take a lot of time and energy, and he might get jealous. |
I am home all the time too, raising a 12 year old. I have 5 dogs, and they love the fact that I am home. When I am home alone, sitting on the computer, they will lay down beside me, or on the couch. When I am up and being busy, they get up and run around. They seem to do what I am doing. My youngest will be 1 year old Jan. 4th, and the oldest is 10 years old. I love having them all. I keep them company, and they keep me company. |
thank you for all your replies! unfortunately, I am severely allergic to cats but thanks for the suggestion. It was a good idea. i did have 2 playdates a week for him over the summer but since then, there aren't as many people out walking about (i live in the city). I'm not going to rehome him b/c i love him so much! He has millions of toys to play with so I know that's not the problem. I'm just going to try to get him a playmate as soon as possible. :animal36 I know that would make him really happy. Thanks for making me feel like I am being a good mother :) |

I was hoping that you'd say that!! :p I think that visits and outings should work just fine. |

I think going out (for walks, playing the park) etc once or twice a day would be a big help for him too! It seems like he is pretty social...and that is good....so being out and about would probably liven him right up. And there is nothing wrong with that....my two liven up when company comes here too! To be honest...I notice no difference in Mojo since we got LilyGrace.....course, we always had the big dogs too (just not in the house while we were gone)....so, getting another dog....although that may help, it may not....soooooooo I would try more toys (interactive ones), more outings and walks, etc. AND you are at home working...what a blessing right there.....you have a lot of opportunity for all that PLAY TIME!! :yay_jump: I don't feel bad about asking about rehoming.....that is why you have a family here on YT!!! :love-hug1 |
