chewing drawstrings..........? Ok so my 9.5 week old baby, Zima is CRAZY about the drawstrings on our pants/tops/jackets and of course our shoelaces also!!! whenever i sit down to play with him he pounces on my drawstrings immediately!!! I don't mind at all, the only thing that worries my husband and i is when he does it he grinds his teeth so hard you can hear him from across the room and every now and then he whimpers like he's hurting himself!!! He has lots of amazing toys of all different materials that i rotate around so he doesn't loose interest (he has one that he has all the time) but he plays with them for such a limited time.. however if i left my pyjamas on the ground he would sit chewing the drawstings for hours!! I feel like his teeth hurt and this relieves him but then he whimpers, and god help me if i try to take them away, he searches like crazy! Does anyone think it's dangerous to let him chew these? :animal-pa |

The only thing I can think of is get the bitter apple spray to spray on them... but you have to re-spray once every few hours or it wears off. My little boy Nikko loves drawstrings too, though maybe not to quite to the extreme extent your pup does. We've just removed all the drawstrings from our hoodies and sweatpants - didn't really need 'em anyways. Shoelaces are a different story, but we try to keep them covered with wide pants, or just shove a different chew toy in his mouth then praise him for chewing the good thing if he ever tries to dive after the shoelaces. Puppies tend to be pretty easy to distract for the most part. I have no advice on the painful sounding chewing... But I doubt drawstring chewing is OK, particularly after I just got done reading through the other post that just got bumped called "What is the Oddest thing your Yorkie has ever POOPED?" :-) I'm sure others will have more and better advice than me :-) YT is great! Lauren & Nikko PS: I was thinking I read somewhere on here that pig ears were bad for our dogs... hopefully someone else here with a better memory will chime in on that. |
Yes, pigs ears and rawhide are not good to give your dog. Bullysticks and hooves are much better :thumbup: |
Your puppy is probably teething and likes the way the drawstring feels. Most yorkies have to have a few baby teeth removed at some point in their first year, so it is likely there is something going on there. I would just suggest getting your pup lots of different things to chew on, like ropes and fleece toys, rawhide and nylabones (I've heard lots of negative info on these two but I supervise my pup's chewing to make sure he isn't digesting any little pieces), or squeaky toys. One of my dogs is an extreme chewer, and loves to tear things apart, and he's over 3.5 yrs old! Just don't leave your pajamas around, and replace them with lots of approved things to chew! |
lol ... mine do the exact samething They sit ... actually lay and chew on my shoelaces for hours at a time It's like a baby pacifier to them I had given them a pair of old sneakers to demolish I know ... but they don't have access to any other shoes ;) |
My 9 month old started chewing on certain kinds of clothing i wear. She loves my jacket, and has chewed up a robe :eek: But, for her it is more of a comfort thing. If u do not want her doing that then you ar egoing to have to be consistent about not letting her . Offer a chew toy, or Bulkly stick instead. Put her down every time she chews on your drawstrings. I just do not want her to swallow the drawstrings or plastic, that will be bad for her. If she is just a puppy then she does feel the need to chew. :aimeeyork |
Rope toys are great for chewing. Mine love them! Just check them frequently for any loose strings. |
Redirect YUKI LOVESSSSSSSSSSS hoodie drawstrings! We wear hoodies a lot on the Oregon Coast. I do let him chew on it when he is in my lap. If it were a "problem" or "concern" I would treat it like raising kids...REDIRECT him to something else to chew...toys, treats, etc...I only use pig ears for teething! With any chewing the dog must be monitored. Melissa |
