Help me pick a friend for my Yorkie
 

I have a 3lb yorkie that I am looking for a friend for her to keep her company while I am at work. DH doesn't want another yorkie and he said absolutely no pomeranians or chihuahuas. He thinks they are too yappy. Our yorkie never barks and we love it. We need something quiet due to living in an apartment. What do you have as a friend for your Yorkie?

If you ever want to allow the dogs to be together unattended, the new dog needs to be very tiny also. Since Yorkies and Chis are out, how about a Shih Tzu, Maltese, Norfolk, Toy Fox Terrier?

We also have a Japanese Chin. He is not a yippy dog either and is a very sweet, loveable boy.

English Toy Spaniel comes to mind too....another small dog. They also have a "breed" of Shih Tzu called a "Chinese Imperial" or "Imperial Shih Tzu" that are supposed to be between 4 and 9 lbs. (I've only seen these on the web, so I may be putting my foot in my mouth in the same way people do when they say "teacup" Yorkie, but I don't know.....I only know what I've read about them.) Shih Tzu's are small in size, but they weigh quite a bit more than standard Yorkies. I thought they were terribly pretty dogs, which is why I looked at them and then more closely at the Chinese Imperials. BUT, I fallen in love with the breed (Yorkies) and will be getting another one, myself, when the time is right!

(There is a website that has pretty good breed descriptions including size/weight, and it's actually where I found Bella....I won't do that again now that I know what I know, but it's still a good resource to search breeds and see pictures. It's Puppies for Sale, Dogs for Sale and Dog Breeders if you're interested. On the left side of the page, select "Small" from the drop down and "Search" [nothing comes up when you search "X-Small"]. That will get you a pretty big list of small dogs and descriptions of the breeds.)

If we weren't Yorkiefolk then our next dog breed would be MALTESE. They shouldn't get much bigger then a Yorkie, then again you do have a 3 pounder.

My second choice would be a Papillon. Yorkie is first choice of course.

I had an Imperial Shih tzu. She was about 8-9 pounds. She was such a love! Never growled (unless in play, like tug-of-war), nipped, bit, or anything. Not a yapper either.

Personally, though, I think I'd go with another Yorkie! I've fallen too much in love with Lexi. :)

I'd also go with a Maltese....but what about a Biewer? As far as barking...I think you got lucky with your little one. I have three, and two of them bark at the wind. My third never barks....only whines..he's so cute. Good luck with your search!!! Keep us posted!!

My little guy isn't a barker either except when the vacuum is running.:D

I think Chinese cresteds are cute but not sure if they are barkers. I recently had a toy poodle show up at my house (trying to find owners). He is around 6 pounds and a character.

Thanks for all of the ideas. We do plan to get a Biewer just not right now. We are going to wait a bit to get one.

I just went to a Maltese forum and it seems like they are super high maintenance. But they are adorable.

The Shih-tzu seems like a nice breed. I wonder about it getting too big for her though. Maybe an Imperial would be better.

Maybe I did get lucky with my yorkie. I thought they were all quiet. :) I did socialize her a lot though. I got her at 12 weeks and took her to work with me everyday until she was like 5 months old. I always try to take her places to keep her socialized.

A good compatible small dog would seem to be a maltese. I think they stay quite small. Although it seems all dog breeds can vary in size. What is the reason your DH doesn't want another yorkie?

I don't know why he doesn't want another. He just hasn't bonded with her. She adores him and always wants to lick his face. He plays with her and pets her and says she is good but she isn't his favorite. I think maybe because she is a squirmy butt and he can't just sit and cuddle with her. ;)

My Shih Tzu was not a barker. Never meet one that was. Keep in mind that two dogs might cause barking. You should here it here when I get home at night. All the dogs going nuts.

I have a Papillion and my Yorkie. They're about the same size. Baron is 7 pounds @ 1 year. Sammy is 15 pounds @ 7 years. Baron has alot of energy and Sammy is a slug. I've seen other Papillions that are not over-weight that act very much like my Yorkie. Sammy and Baron are both really laid back and not barkers. I think the 2 breeds are similar in behavior. :dogwalk::dogsm2: Hope this helps...
