Number one, how old is she? If she is a tiny puppy, the lethargy could be due to low sugar and this is very dangerous! A puppy can go downhill really quickly. We gave Oscar Frosted Cheerios when he was a tiny baby and he still gets them, a few a day. You might want to run to the store and get a tube of Nutri-Cal to give her something. You might also need to try some palatable canned food like Little Ceaser's just to get her to eat something, til you get her over the hump. Keep in mind tho, changing her diet will most likely result in stomach upset so it might be better to try and get her to eat some boiled chicken and rice...she just needs some sort of nutrition. Best of luck with your new baby and get her to the vet just as soon as possible.

As a puppy mill survivor she may not be lethargic just incredibly nervous and timid - all the good things you are offering she has never seen before, like grass, toys, good food. You're doing the right thing by taking her to the vet - do let us know what he says. You're doing all the right things so don't worry - hope she will soon settle down, love, Ana xx

You're very good to rescue the puppy. She may just be nervous, and not know what to expect, so you'll definitely need to prove to her that you will not hurt her. As for food, dogs don't generally starve themselves, so she will eat unless there's something wrong with her (in which case you see the vet). Just give it time, and keep leaving fresh food and water. Most likely because food has been changed so many times, she would rather just wait for something better than eat what's given. But that doesn't mean you should change the food. In the meantime, I agree...a little bit of Nutri-Cal should help.

With regard to the crate, a lot of the puppy mill dogs don't know that you can't go in the crate, because they're left there all day...they have no choice and that's what they think should be done. Also, keep in mind that "outside" is a very scary, weird place. She's probably never seen sunlight. I would suggest taking her out for a long walk, letting her explore different smells and sounds. Then, pet her and let her know that "outside" is good. They say that when you get a dog first, the best thing to do is take them out for a long walk before you get them home so that they don't think they are just going from one kennel to another. What a wonderful thing you did, Hats of to you. It will take time all that you are doing sounds good to me. I would keep that kind of food you got her and not change it till you go to the vet. Changing it might make her stomach upset like others have said. I have a rescue chow-mix that I found when she was about 6 months old and in terrible shape. Lucky is 15 years old and is the sweetest dog and loves my two yorkies to death. It will take time dogs are very forgiving and with lots of love and kindness she will come around.
